I don't know if this falls under the category of tricks, but it is certainly stupid, and frankly should be considered Mercruiser abuse. I decided my fellow iboaters should witness the wanton display of hatred towards this machinery. Oh, and for those of you who don't read the entire ad, it says "...does seem to have a vibration, may be from the outdrive which may need the u-joints replaced..." Ya think?! How about revving that motor a little faster while in gear and drive tilted up...geez!

That made my teeth hurt.

Reminded me of a year or so ago out at the lake when this guy was trying to start his Force 115. Wouldn't start so he tilts it out of the water and got it to start. Then he revved it and revved it over and over. Sounded like he was hitting 3 or 4 grand. I was loading my boat and pulled out and tied down. When I left he was still revving it out of the water.

YO DUDE, anything that has a Vibration concerning Engines,, Especially a boat with a drive that has U-joints,, Keep it SLOWWW... Take it apart and find out if its the Motor, or the drive system.. Dont waste a good Engine at the expense of a few U-joints, or a good drive system at the expence of a motor that might be going bad,, But still salvagable.....

What pissed me off the most was the $149 "administrative fee" they have hidden at the bottom of that boat auction, that is "in addition to the sale price."

Uh no, sale price is sale price. I doubt that would fly with Ebay anyway. That could be an illegal auction.

That poor little engine! You could tell from the moment it started that there is something wrong and what it needed was TLC, NOT abuse!

As the daughter of a mechanic and aficionado of things mechanical I consider the video akin to kicking a puppy! :(

Hmm, interesting...someone must have finally said something to the fellow who posted the video of the outdrive screaming out of water because he pulled the video. I guess he figured out that was not a good way to advertise the boat.

Wow! A few days ago I was looking at boats on ebay. Ran across an outboard ad from this same company. Same type of video with a nice Johnson 40 hp WOT in gear, for a long time!![had muffs on,but jeezus!] Someone by now has to have told them they are turning about buyers like crazy with their vids!!!

As already stated this is more common than we like to think. I've seen guys revving at 4K with muffs on.....and if you tell them anything they says "It's fine, it has water going thru it"

So sad. I actually went to purchase a boat once and before I knew it the guy fired it up in the driveway...no muffs...nothing. I asked him if he had done that before and he said "All the time, I don't run it long". Needless to say I walked away from that one.

Can some explain to me what the high RPM does to damage the engine if it is cooled properly? What's difference if it is in the water on land?

^^ that's the problem, the engine is not cooled properly...with muffs on my 350 I can maybe get up to 1200rpm and still see a little bit of excess water coming out the side of the muffs...any higher rpm and the hose just can't supply enough water...besides revving an engine without a load on it isn't to great either.

Re: Ignorant, stupid or just don't care? You decide.

Revving any piston engine to high RPMS without a load puts some ungodly forces on the rods, crank, and bearings. Specifically, a lot of the force to reverse piston travel at the top of the stroke is provided by combustion pressure under load, and must be supplied by the connecting rod with no load.

All 100% true.....plus revving the engine with no loads makes it VERY easy to rev the engine well above it's safe operating range.

Wow did you see that thing shake when he fired it up, bad miss in one of the cylinders..:(

not only did he do a bad thing revving that poor little engine but I seriously doubt that oil had time to lubricate anything in that engine before he revved it up...

I was waiting to hear the metal to metal knocking of a spun bearing
