Does anyone have an idea of what would cause the electronic ignition on the 40 hp merc. to have a delay between the time I turn the key and when the ignition actually fires? This has been going on for a while. Just ran the boat next to the house. It fired, of course. After I stopped it, it wouldn't fire again. I have pull started it a few times recently. What do I need to do to fix this? Thanks.

Re: ignition problems with 2001 40 hp, 3 cyl. merc.

The ignition switch is actually two separate switches in one as the ignition is a 'ground-to-kill' while the accessories and starter are 12 volt.

Among the wires on the switch are a solid black, ground, and another black wire with a thin yellow trace line, this is the 'ground-to-kill coming from the ignition module on the motor.

With the motor OFF, check between these two wires with an Ohm's meter, there should be continuity ONLY WITH THE key turned OFF. Switch the key ON and OFF several times while watching the meter, if ever their is continuity with the key ON, the switch is going bad.
