Ignition Problem

Hi there - I'm new to these forums, but they look like a pretty good resource. I have a 20 year old 75HP Merc outboard with a Quicksilver ignition. For several years now I have been having a sporadic problem with the starter. I will turn the key several times, trying to get the engine to start, and then suddenly ... nothing! Turning the key produces nothing - the starter motor doesn't engage at all. Normally, when you engage the ignition by turning the key halfway, it emits a loud beep to let you know it's in the start position. When this problem occurs, there is no beep at all, and yet all the gauges work as does the horn and lights. I used to think the battery had drained, and would recharge the battery, after which the problem seemed to go away for a while. But this weekend, I discovered that it has something to do with the choke mechanism. When you push the key in, the choke engages, and every once in a while, this seems to somehow short circuit the signal to the starter. The temporary solution is to rapidly press the choke several times, after which the ignition works again. Has anyone else experienced this problem, or know how to cure it? This problem seems to be getting worse this summer. Thanks

Re: Ignition Problem

it sound like your ignition key is going bad , you will have to take control apart and check wires if wires look ok it's likly your ignition key. you can get a replacement. also test started solenold.

Re: Ignition Problem

Yeah, I thought it was the starter or solenoid too, but they both checked out fine. I'm sure it has something to do with the ignition itself - in particular, the choke.

Re: Ignition Problem

I am talking about the ignition key not the starter .if you can hold it in and start the motor there is something not working in the key think I would replace ignition switch

Yes, you might be right. Next step is to find some schematics for the ignition and then take it apart. Any idea where I can get the schematics? Thanks

Re: Ignition Problem

One of the first things anyone that is going to work on a boat motor should have is a service manual for the motor. A OME manual is best and others can be helpful. Most all manuals will have wiring diagrams along with other helpful info. As for your trouble, testing the wires with a ohm meter along with the ING. SW. will find just what is bad. From what you have stated the ING. SW. would be the first thing I would look into.
