Excuse my ignorance, I am trying my best to learn the ins and outs of my boat to learn and help others.

I currently have 3 boats, and for the life of me cannot figure out ignition switches and what I’m doing wrong.

I have an extra set of controls I bought off eBay; and was able to confirm the electrical components of the engine work fine and start the engine.

I do not have the neutral safety switch plugged in to a nuetral safety box. I also left the gray and brown wire disconnected as I was told you do not need those plugged in to get the engine to crank. I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong. The ignition I am using is one that uses snap connectors from Amazon.

The image below shows the wires I took directly from the red plug, and plugged into my ignition switch, no other components are in the path.

Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Or where to start?

engine mdl #???

yellow red is suppose to reach the solenoid control post to get the engine cranking .. check all wires and crimps

whatever you have the key B+ Red will energize YR while turned for starting

if the solenoid does not reapond trace YR and see why the solenoid is not getting B+.... trace it from key to solenoid... look for any safety devices neutral switch etc... that may prevent starting in gear.

post your mdl#!!!

Volt meter will make it easy.

Does the motor crank if you bypass everything? Starter turn?

You need to be more clear about product and what you've done....to many answers to even discuss.

Yes everything works, if I touch the hot wire to the bottom of the solenoid. I know the fuse isn’t broken because when I plug in a different set of controls it cranks, but when I try to plug in my new ignition, connected to a new red wire, nothing. No clicks, no primer, nothing. I am plugging everything in exactly like the diagram, I’m really not sure where my issue is and how to trouble shoot further.

very simply... just read the ohms value betwwen the B post (RED) of the switch and the S post.... (YR) you should see 0 homs (short) while you turn the key to START

A push to choke (C post) key will also have 0 ohms (short) with the B+ post ONLY when pushed in .
the resistance betweem the M posts should be INFINITE while the key is turned ON and beyond (start)

the alternative is to do comparative measurements between what works and what does not :)
