Re: Igintion Switch

What kind of control are you running? The original side-mount control only has two switches, the key switch and the start-in-neutral switch. Newer controls have another one, the lanyard kill switch that shuts it off if you fall overboard. "Shift Switches" were used in the old electric shift motors. Those controls won't work at all on your 200hp, so you must not have that one.

Re: Igintion Switch

Joe forgot to ask also could it be the switch in my control box under the shift I believe that is where it is I was told that could cause this problem also.

That is the safety switch that makes and breaks the circuit that leads to the electric starter solenoid. It has nothing to do with the ignition. That switch breaks the contact when the c/box is in gear so that you cannot engage the electric starter.

Re: Igintion Switch

Ok right now what's going on is she has full power comes off plain than 20 secs after that she drops to 4k than 3k and stays there at wot.

I assume you've checked the compression. I may have read what the readings are but don't remember. But at any rate, if the compression is as it should be.............

At that point, remove the spark plugs and check for water deposits on the electrodes.

Have a spark tester rigged so that you can use in then and there to actually see if you have proper spark that will jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP!

Does the fuel primer bulb have a tendency to go flat as those rpms drop?

I'll recheck compression but I really think it's something else because I get full power with np at all just dies out after she comes off plain but if I put in neutral for a sec than hit it she goes again

Re: Igintion Switch

forget what you was told about a safety switch causing the problem. only modern motors have a reduced throttle set up that is designed to get you home with a problem. the old motors will sound a alarm and thats it.

so the basic problem you have is that the motor will pull strong from a standing start then after 30 seconds you loss power and the boat drops off plane. this can be repeated after the boat has stayed a low rpm for a little while. ok lets get all the possible problems and see what fits.
overheating ignition components would require the motor to be shut down and cool before they would correct themselfs so its most proberly not a ignition component.
to much or to little fuel would fit as the engine would get to rich or to lean then loose power. to rich would be a carb or timing isssue to lean would be a carb or fuel supply problem issue

Ok thanks so this has to be a fuel problem only correct ? Maybe the carbs need to be adjusted or floats checked right ?

Re: Igintion Switch

start simple. joe asked if the bulb collapses when this happens - maybe a vacuum lock in the gas tank. if you get someone to help you can try to pump the bulb to see if that fix's the problem which would be a way of checking your fuel pump and the lines for a vacuum leak. have the fuel lines been replaced in the past few years? if not they could be collapsing and causing a blockage.
the list goes on and on

try not to focus on "it has to be this and only this" we can only go off what you tell us so things like when was the last time it ran right. what have you done to it so far. whats the compression test readings. when was the carbs last rebuilt etc would realy help us narrow the possible problems down.

Thanks to all for the help sorry for the run around with this but it's fixed. Had a little piece of hose or plastic in the fuel jet of the carb....
