idle stabilizer--trash it?

I have a 115 hp Mercury Inline 6 1984. I was told that I should take the idle stablizer off because it was done away with on later models and has a tendancy to burn our powerpacks. Is this correct and will it hurt anything not having it. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems right now, but I just replaced the stator due to bad rectifier.

I think the 1999 and 2000 carb engines still have them.

jeep, keep it...it does nothing more than vary voltage on the bias curcuit, have never heard of one damaging anything else, have only saw one in 20 years go bad [on a v6] they really do help stalling at idle...keep it.

Thanks for the reply--I think I will keep it. I'm new to boat motors and am learning quite a bit of information on this board. Thanks again.
