idle problems

i have a 96 50 hp johnson i was having fireing problems and replaced power pac . that fixed the fireing problem,now iam having trouble with the idleing.i have to choke it to get it to start.even te with the engine warmed up.after it gets going under throttle it runs great.but when u put it in neutral it will run for just a little bit then go dead.i have cleaned the carbs and replaced fuel line.

you probably missed the idle jet(s) in your carb cleaning

i have cleaned the carbs again,but it still dosent want to idle , after it warms up i have to choke it to get it to start.it has a rough idle. I was wondering if it could possibily be the plugs?

Is the bulb staying hard, might have a fuel pump going south.

the bulb will not stay hard because the fuel pump sucks the fuel..so the fuel line before the pump is in a vaccum...if it runs fine beyond idle then I would assume fuel pump is ok...a new set of correct plugs is always a good thing and can help with idle issues, but I think you still have idle passage issue or timing...what is timing at idle??

I have no idea how to tell what timing is at idle. i dont think the carbs have any adjustments but iam not sure, i dont have much knowledge about boat motors

you need to find a friend who can show you a few things about how to check your motor..I still think you have carb trouble

What's the compression on it? Have you done a good de-carb on it?

one thing i just remembered when i replaced the power pac i had a wire from the pac pinched between the pac and the engine and it was shorting out the power pac .I fixed the wire and it seemed fine. i was just wondering if that might affected the power pac and if that would cause the idle problem i am having
