Hello, I've got a Johnson 110hp v-4, 1988. I'd like to know a little about the tilt/trim on this motor. My manual shows several different motors used on the tilt/trim unit and I can't tell which one I have, I can't find any numbers or markings on the housing.

Also the trim is louder than other boats' trims. It doesn't grind or anything but it is quite loud. I've timed the trimming from full in to full out at 10 seconds and from there tilt to full up takes an additional 8 seconds. Does this seem right? On the water the boat planes out so quickly that I'm usually waiting on the trim to come out far enough to lift the bow and get up to full speed.

My manual shows that there are different trim times for different trim motors. Are any of these interchangeable? Do they cost much?

Thanks for reading,
Calico

Trim all the way in too full tilt up should take between 14-20 seconds. (depending on the pump motor)... At 18 seconds, your ok...

For what it's worth, trim on my 86, 70hp johnyrude was rather loud...

As for which pump motor, and if they are all interchangable, I have no idea...

Thanks Snapperbait.

According to my manual I'm within specs too for the slowest of trim motors used. (Showa) I just can't figure out which one I have. I see some of the motors are quite fast. (Prestolite) I'd like to figure out how to identify mine and whether or not I can switch to another motor for more responsive trimming.

Prestolite motor 3" diameter, electrical cable comes out of top of motor and is retained with a nut.
Bosch motor is 2.5" in diameter, electrical cable comes out of top of motor, but you can see two seperate wires.
Showa motor is 3" diameter, electrical cable comes out of top of motor, and is retained with two screws and a bracket.
OR Showa motr with a 2.4" or 2.9" diameter with electrical cable that comes out of the motor bottom base.

Fantastic! Your first post and you're helping a guy out instead of asking for it! Welcome TLL and good luck with iBoats. I'm going to see what I've got this weekend and get back. Are any or all of these interchangeable or am I only able to replace with the same motor as I already have? Any aftermarkets?

Thanks again!!!
Calico

Re: Identify my tilt/trim motor and troubleshoot.

Alright, got to the boat this week and checked the trim motor. Man it's cold out there! I believe I have the Showa motor, it has a two conductor cable coming from the base of the motor. I didn't have my caliper with me but it looked like the 2.4 diameter motor.

My Clymer manual shows both Showa motors, the Bosch motor, and one of the Prestolite motors sharing the part #394176. I'd like to switch to the faster Prestolite #393259 motor if it is possible. Is this motor directly interchangeable and are they still available? I've seen plenty of aftermarket motors but I can't determine how they would compare. Has anyone had any experience with this one Arco Trim Motor at iBoats? or any other aftermarket motors?

Thanks, Calico

.... or you could put another battery in there and run it on 24vdc. That seems to move 'em right along.

c/6
Hooty
