I was able to pick this up for a great deal - $275! The owner said it is a 1999 2 stroke, 25hp, electric start, long shaft Merc with remote steering, throttle and shifting. Kicker is the identifying sticker on the shaft is warn off.

When I started looking for a carb rebuild kit (one of the seals seems to be leaking) I found there's lots of versions of the 25hp. Can anyone help me identify which model this is?

That silver disk with the 0G.... on it is the serial number. That will give you the year if you look on the maxrules site. The Mercury site will give you the HP as well as the year.

This is what I found there:
Mercury ceased publishing this information after the 1996 model year. There is no way to find the model year of motors with significantly higher
serial numbers than listed in these guides. There is NO serial-to-year cross-reference chart for 1997 and later motors.
Mercury has never really used model years for much of anything other than "sales tools" in dealerships.
We WILL need your serial number to look up correct parts.

and
Mercury did not publish model year information for 1997 & newer outboards. The year is now normally noted on the serial number sticker.

If I understand that correctly I can not use the serial number to find my model number. Correct?

Going by the decals…it’s somewhere between 96-99 I’d think.
Just thought I’d ask…what’s the story with the white marking on the upper mid section ? Is that salt dust or heat damage or something less drastic ?

I was able to confirm it’s a 1999.

The white stuff is a result from it being left in the water and not cleaned. Some told me it was calcium buildup. Hard as rock. I soaked it in CLR for about 2 weeks. I started scraping it off with a putty knife and wire brush. When it’s clean I’ll be repainting the motor and putting new decals on it.
