Identify Motor

Purchased this motor and was advised it was a 1978 Johnson 25 hp. Data plate is gone, has been thoroughly painted camo. Has electric start. Any way to tell without data plate.

Well their close if not right. I have a 1978 35 HP and that's all close. The carb throats are a lot smaller on the 25 so that might help but unnecessary really. The I'd tag on the carb could probably confirm horsepower. You can match it up with a parts company.

Everything else tells me it's of that era.

It is either a 25 or a 20hp. A 35 would be considerably Different below the Cowl Pan. Bracket, Midsection, Lower Unit, and Prop

Thanks everyone I will continue in that direction. It runs great, just really bad paint job. Just wanting to confirm in case have to order parts

It’s no guarantee but sometimes the disk that looks like a core plug can help you out with a model or ser number.
