There where actually two different kits available the one that I linked you to for the stator with the extra coil mounts on and then this kit with the stator and coils.

The reason you can't if find a soft plug with a serial number in it is there is none the serial number shoul d be stamped into the pad below the comet/lightning mark. The soft plugs did not ncome along in till the mid 80s.

Thank You " Laddies", awesome! I found the stamp and the serial number is 4854167 indicating according to the conversion chart at mastertech a 1978 EL. You were correct in that the power head has been replaced. Also one of the kits that Gerry sent a link to from ebay matches the part number of the kit in the link you sent, part number 339-5607A2. If this is the right kit I assume I will have to remove the current set up and replace it with this one? Is that correct? Also is this a task that with a manual and a fair bit of mechanical skill I would be able to accomplish here at home? Again assuming, I would guess that marking the flywheel to the shaft would not be accurate if I were replacing the complete assembly? Once again I would like to thank you for all of your help and your support. I really do appreciate you taking the time to help me.

Thats not really covered in the manual. I did read over what seemed to be the procedure which pertains to the full throttle position in forward gear and a set of marks visible from the port side of the motor, sort of a minor underview if you will.( one which travels with the assembly and the other stationary). Though it seems as your viewing position may matter slightly. Once again I would like to thank you for all of your help and your support. I really do appreciate you taking the time to help me.

Your flywheel is a 1 piece flywheel and don't need to be marked it is held in place by the key and the point plate contolls the timing so you shoud not disturb that. If the kit you have found has the stator in it your go to go, if not you need to see that your stator has the 2 extra pegs to mount the charging coils on.

Hello Laddies, These attachments are from the listing of the lighting kit. I asked the seller to verify the application by serial number and he kindly did so. It looks as if the stator is one of the components in the clear bag. If by chance that the stator I have on the motor now has the additional pegs if I read correctly I can attach/secure the coils onto it, if not replace the stator and continue correct? If you have a moment to look over these photographs I would greatly appreciate it. Also I would like to again thank you for your instruction, sharing your skills, knowledge and oversight. This is very kind and noble and greatly appreciated.

Re: Identify Mercury 7.5 hp outboard.

Laddies,
I Have an additional question for you if you have time. When I recieved the lighting kit it came with a voltage regulator. Do you know if I need to install this along with the rectifier? In the diagrams on the links I don't see the regulator in conjunction with the rectifier, I'm not sure if it's an either or application. As in either the rectifier or the regulator. I have a battery connected and a switch plate for the lights and I am just trying to use the motor to charge the battery while running. As you mentioned the kit did not come with the stator plate necessary, I did find a new one and I've succesfully removed the flywheel. Following the instructions supplied in the kit I am at the point of installing the voltage regulator, it seems though that this may not be necessary but I am not sure. If that makes any sense and you can help again I would greatly appreciate your knowledge and skills. I would also like to mention that I mean no disrespect by addressing you with your ID name (Laddies)! Thank You so much for your time and sharing your guidance!

Ray, all you need is the rectifier as the system don't put out many amps. If I never get called worst than Laddies I'll have it made. Bob

Mr.Bob! (Laddies), You're the greatest. Thats great to learn and a bit of a short cut as the mounting of the regulator was in an awkward area. So here goes another round of learning, this is really great! Thanks for today's lesson!
