Can someone help me accurately identify an electric start Mercury 7.5 hp outboard motor ?
Serial number 2812359 Motor has a lightweight fiberglass cowl cover and blue band decals. Oddley enough I cannot locate a wiring diagram specific to this particular motor. The manual I have from mercury is not specific for this motor. The diagrams offered are all around it but not specifically for this motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Aslo can someone offer an accurate part name or number for the "Lighting Winding" ? I searched for it here at iboats but could not locate the part. Only a cdi stator and though I believe this to be a correct part for this motor I don't think it is the Lighting winding>. Again thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge and education!

Wrong about working at Crowley;

What part are you having difficulty seeing? The stator seems clear enough to me.

If you click on the picture of the parts shown you can blow up the picture.

Re: Identify Mercury 7.5 hp outboard.

Thank You Gerry, I didn't realize you could blow up the images I can see the parst just fine now. I didn't realize that the "lighting windings were made to the flywheel or so it seems. On my motor there are no leads connected to the rectifier mounted on the port side of the engine which should be from the lighting windings as pictured in the manual I have. It shows two yellow leads from the winding and one red lead which travels back to the start button positive. I have only the red lead and was trying to determine where the yellow leads would come from and if there is a part missing. The motor runs great and the electric start works fine, I was trying to determine why it does not charge the battery during running. Thank You very much for your help. I just asked about crowley because there is a small town near here that is named Crowley.

Race;

What manual are you using and if you have it, the p/n?

As well, do you know the p/n of the stator you have installed?

Re: Identify Mercury 7.5 hp outboard.

Gerry, I can't find a part number on the manual, this what is written on the cover:
Mercury Outboard Service Manual
Merc 75 / 110 / 200 / 1969 - 1978
7.5 - 9.8 - 20 Hp

Each page has "Service Manual" written in the upper left corner.
I don't know the part number for the stator, I wanted to ask of you if I can remove the flywheel without affecting the ignition timing to check and see what is or is not there and possibly photograph whatever I find for more detailed offering. Thank you for your help, I really appreciate this!

Ray;

Well, you have a manual so you know you can get the flywheel off. Just mark it carefully to get it back in the same position.

Re: Identify Mercury 7.5 hp outboard.

Gerry I think we've located the reason there are no leads from the lighting stator. There is no lighting stator and the flywheel is not quipped with the windings to support the stator. I have no idea why there is a rectifier attached to the block, perhaps before I bought the motor these were replaced with the current ones. I didn't pull the flywheel yet but I am curious now as to whether there are point sets for the ignition. There is a cdi power pack ( p/n 339-5287A1 ) located at the back or rear side of the motor, out of curiosity would you say that would indicate points or no points?

Re: Identify Mercury 7.5 hp outboard.

Ray;

Something was bugging me about your description of the way the engine is set up as it would originally have been delivered as per the parts listing I sent you.

Did you get the s/n from the transom clamp data plate and if so, can you check the powerhead for a disc like this to confirm the s/n:

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/8224/391496208.jpg

It almost looks like some previous owner was attempting to add battery charging capability to the engine and didn't complete the job.

That switchbox appears to be for 7.5hp., 5206550 - Up

Originally, this engine had points and condensers as you will see under STATOR PLATE ASSEMBLY, items 8 and 21.

Rather than waste anymore of your time, hopefully j_martin or bktheking will chime in here as they are both well versed in this or you could drop them a PM and ask them to look at this.

Yes, but 2812359 is well before that, it will be interesting Ray, to see if the powerhead is the same s/n

Re: Identify Mercury 7.5 hp outboard.

The serial means nothing on assembled engine but the box 339-5287 or 339-6222 should tell the mechanic that the powerhead has been replaced as a complete unit, a update so to speak and the switch box tells you that the engine was built after 1974.

Re: Identify Mercury 7.5 hp outboard.

Thank You Gerry, good afternoon. I looked for the disc and could not locate one anywhere on the engine. I did see a white stamp on the upper cylinder which says "Comet" and just beneath it a raised or mold stencil which says "Lightning" for what that may be worth. In a similar thought I wondered if this was an upgrade or piece together to change from the points system to this I assume is referred to as a trigger system? I am just getting in but going to try to take a couple of quick pictures while it daylight and try to attach them here somehow. I did look over the link that another gentleman whom also replied just after you and I have seen this diagram indicating the lighting stator. However as I mentioned there is not one on this motor and I am not certain if I could put one with this assembly and flywheel idf I could even find the correct one. As I mentioned I am not sure why the rectifier remains attached to the engine, this leaves me to wonder if the lighting stator was there and then removed for some reason. Would you happen to know if the lighting stator will work with this flywheel, and if I need to identify the flywheel to you could you please send instructions in regards to the information you need for this? Thank you so much for you help, this is greatly appreciated as well as the Gentleman whom also replied.

Re: Identify Mercury 7.5 hp outboard.

Thank You kindly for your help. Would you mind if I ask if this kit was to replace the set up thats there or to be additional and added to or over whats there now? My apologies for my ignorance in regards to this , I am trying to learn. Thank you once again for your help throughout all of this, its very kind of you.

Re: Identify Mercury 7.5 hp outboard.

Ray;

The attachments you provided in your last post are invalid.
The fact that there is no s/n disc on your powerhead suggests that you have a replacement powerhead. As I prefer to have proof of the information I provide, I cannot determine the year of your replacement powerhead just by the fact that it has a certain switchbox on it.

However, here are two lighting kits for Merc 75:
1. 339-5566A4 for s/ns 3801458 thru 4092966
2. 339-5607A2 for s/ns 4092966 and above

What I suggest you do is talk to the people in the link below, explaining your situation, the parts you have now and see if they can offer you assistance. They might be able to advise you which of the above kits are most applicable for you, if either.

Good Luck!
