Re: Ideas wanted on mast repair

Hi
just wondering if you found out any further information on the Petrel? I also have one that I was given as I was looking for a small sailboat and a neighbour told me that if I came and dug the flowers out of it I could have it. Her children had grown up and she was using it as a planter at her cottage!
The boat is great fun but I would love to have some more information about it and also any restoration ideas.

Hi Petrel - welcome! I made a few half-hearted attempts to track down more information without a lot of success. I'm hoping to make some progress on the boat itself in August when I'm on vacation for a couple of weeks. My problem is the boat is a three hour drive from where I live and when I do get up there I'm having so much fun sailing it I have neglected the restoration somewhat. Let's see what the rest of the summer brings.

Re: Ideas wanted on mast repair

Hi,

I have an old Petrel that is in a bit of a bad shape that I similarly purchased for little moola to add to my Laser I so that I can sail with my novice partner. However, it has been repaired where you are having trouble with the inclusion of a pulley at the top of the mast. It isn't ideal but it works fine.

I have a different problem...the daggerboard will NOT come out of the housing. I have taken it apart, filed it down, oiled it and put it back together and got it to come out once but never again...Any thoughts anyone out there?

Also...does anyone have a picture of how they have rigged theirs? I have jury rigged mine by replacing many damaged and missing parts but can't sort out the downhaul (non-existent) and the outhaul (also non-existent)

Thanks,

Welcome to iboats and thanks for the mast repair results. I will probably first try the plastic tube, then go to a pulley if it doesn't work.

As for rigging, I've got no downhaul on my boat. The outhaul is simply a black plastic cleat rivetted to the side of the boom. Not sure it's OEM or not. The boat is a couple of hours away or I'd snap a quick pic. I'll be heading out on vacation next week and could get some pics then. It ain't going to be pretty tho!

As for your daggerboard problem, do you mean it won't rotate on its pin? Which way - up into the centre box or down into the water? When I first launched mine after bringing it home, I found it very difficult to lower the board into the water. A few squirts of WD-40 and a lot of jiggling seemed to work. I have a feeling the pin has worn the hole in the centre board into an oblong shape that tends to get hung up - but I haven't disassembled that particular part of the boat yet.

How is the foam in yours?
