have used tie downs, not that impressed... thinking of putting something similar to a gunwale tie down to the front to stop any movement in bow while on the trailer

Guessing you're looking for a back-up tie down besides the primary winch cable/strap. If so, consider using a chain with a stainless steel turnbuckle. Attach the chain somewhere on the trailer tongue besides the winch stand and attach the turnbuckle through the bow eye. Both chain size and turnbuckles and bolts have weight ratings so be sure and buy ones that will secure the total weight of your boat and then some.

Winch strap, safety chain and if the boat is bouncing a ratcheting tiedown works for our 27 foot crownline.

They make retractable bow straps that bolt to the trailer, and ratchet tight, like the Boat Buckle transom straps.

Cable or chain, with a turnbuckle is probably best.

Then you need to remember to bring a wrench to loosen/tighten the turnbuckle.

Most bow eyes are underneath the roller on the winch stand, and when properly tensioned the boat has no where to go. There also needs to be the safety chain as above. You should not need any more devices or straps.

Happy boating!

Here is how I did mine.

Winch for getting it on and adds first layer of holding.

Ratcheting tie down to keep the bow from bouncing should I hit some unexpected bumps.

Chain if all else fails.

And now that I am looking at in a pic, I need to take those underrated clips off and secure it correctly.

trying to stop any bouncing around of the boat, have tried additional tiedowns but maybe just the way i had them added? have had the coupler break on me once already and had the boat slam in the back of my truck so am especially paranoid- luckily just was just going slow through toll gate and just hit a bump wrong..if that happened on the highway, would have lost my boat...had 3 additional tie downs on the boat at the time

Make a mental picture of this: if the bow eye was UNDER your winch roller...and you had the winch strap good and snug...is there ANY way that your boat could reach your truck tailgate?

The answer is 'NO'.

Give us a picture of your bow eye and winch stand, so that we can understand what went wrong with your setup.

Happy boating!

Re: ideas for securing bow of boat to trailer

I have the winch safety chain and a turnbuckle and chain to secure the bow eye to the trailer frame (tongue). It is very solid and with a roller trailer and very steep hills gives some piece of mind. Of course I have transom straps too....

Re: ideas for securing bow of boat to trailer

boat hit the tailgate more because the trailer coupler fell apart...but boat still moved.. i think part of my problem is the tie down i am using is pulling the boat horizontally not vertically ( have a boat buckle tie down, not the retractable one but can't figure out how to attach it) also noticed the boat doesn't fit that snugly into the bow stop on the trailer..maybe go to a roller instead? agree not much more should be necessary..see alot of boats more valuable than mine- with even less holding them down

I use a turnbuckle on mine. Complete set up was about $15 from Champion Trailer several years ago.

I don't care for S-hooks personally. It would seem there is a chance of coming off. I use hardened spring loaded D rings and chain.

Re: ideas for securing bow of boat to trailer

makes sense..years ago my friend added eye bolts to a trailer to serve as tie down points for dirt bikes. went around a corner the eye bolts opened up ( not fully enclosed at the eye- needed a weld or something there) and the bikes fell off..from my experience can never be too careful- more so with boats as they tend to punish mistakes... anyone who ever forgot to put the drain plug in has to agree with me there!

This is a good setup but imo the turnbuckle should go down to the trailer frame, not the back to the winch post. You want it to have to different grounding points. If it is buckled back to the winch post, it might help with up and down movement but won't help in an accident when the winch post fails. Best to have the turnbuckle go to a welded on peice on the trailer with a d-ring.

And whoever said its not needed probably hasn't seen when a boat comes flying off the front bow roller in an accident. The front winch post is only so strong and can fail under extreme stops or accidents. Not saying the extra strap or chain are going to save your boat, but they can help prevent major catastrofee in an accident. I simply use a winch strap rated for 10000 ponds wraped downward around the frame. I wrap the strap two times around frame and return it to the bow eye and tighten down.

Don't forget the stern straps!

I'll take my chances with it attached to the winch post. I won't even consider welding on the galvanized main tube and have it rust in half in 2 or 3 years .....
