Re: Idea for automatic boat lift on a budget

Hi you should just get a 2000 or 3000 lbs atv winch it has everything that you need and they work from a 12 volt battery it is simple it is strong and it is made for pulling or lifting heavy loads. Good luck.

I just tried this. I went to a junk yard and bought a starter and flywheel off a 1987 cadallac (both cost $41). I mounted the flywheel on the back of the crank wheel between the big crank wheel and the Gear Box. I mounted the starter on a platform extending from the gear box. It was (is) a great idea. My thought was I can use the lift manually to lower the boat, and if I have to crank it manually I could do that too (since the throughout gear on the starter only pops out when energized). The problem I had was getting the starter and the fly wheel to engage. They have to be lined up perfectly and I could maintain the tight tolerances needed. Someone with a little more skill, and patience could probably get this concept to work.

Let me know if anyone tries it - I think it has merit.

I'm not sure where you live or how much it costs to ship, but here's a motor, gear, belt, and plate for $150.

I wonder whether you can run a starter motor that long; they are used in short bursts and may not be designed to take it. Keep an eye on the heat.

Another problem with the garage door it that it is not weatherproof at all. And especially not around salt water.

How about a gas motor?

i think the ATV winch, or even a Powerwinch, makes sense but you are spending what it would cost to do it right. And be careful--that's a lot of stored energy (weight) you are dealing with.

yes I know it's an old thread but it's an interesting topic to pick up where we left off.
