Idea for automatic boat lift on a budget

So I have a 16ft jet boat and have a nice boat lift for it. Problem is, after a couple years of manually turning the wheel up and down each time the boat is taken out on the water and then stored, it is getting really old.

I would love to have a motor to run lift up and down. Unfortunately I don't have the $600 for a new motor system. I suppose I could find a used one for maybe $300 to $400, but that's still really expensive.

My idea is to jerry-rig a garage door opener to serve as the motor. The new Genie's (and I'm sure others) now rely on a DC motor to do the action which are smaller and quieter than the old AC motors. They also now have manual up and down buttons, a long with the ability to set a start and then stop position for automatic function.

Most of the manufacturers even want upwards of $40 to $50 for just the rubber wheel which makes contact with the large boat lift wheel and turns it! That seems crazy... couldn't one just buy a good rubber utility wheel (like for a wheelbarrow), deflate it a little bit, and use that? Or you could even put a sprocket on the lift wheel and use the garage door opener chain (provided the motor has enough torque to turn the smaller gear ratio).

I'm thinking around $200 tops for all the parts to be able to do this... and you might even be able to use it remotely from the house with the remote for a vehicle!!!

What does everyone think? Has anybody already done something similar and posted steps online?

Thanks!

How much does a garage door weigh compared to your boat, will the opener have enough strength/power to do the job?

i doubt if a garage door opener is going to have the ......torque....to lift a boat unless its geared right.

Sorry, but unless you put it into some kinda gear box, a garage door opener dont have the *** needed to pull that weight......you can get a small electric motor with a reduction gearbox on it fairly cheap.....check the unusals first like McMaster and Grainger, MSC, or Electricmotor.com and they can get you lined out for a couple hundred.

I'm right there with you guys about the motor possibly not having enough torque. I guess the nice thing is I could always go to my local Lowe's or Home Depot, buy one, try it out, and if it's not enough I could return it. I have found a Genie up to 3/4 hp. I'm sure there are industrial openers rated higher. It looks like replacement motors for lifts rated to 7000 lbs are about 1 1/2 hp

Jarey I think the part your forgetting is that garage doors have a huge spring that acts as a counter balance, if you disconnect the cables to the door from the spring you will find out just how heavy a garage door is, garage door openers are not very powerful at all.

Sorry......been one of those days.....

What would be worse is if I pull into the driveway and the boat starts going down :)

I know the garage doors have very large springs that keep the weight down for the opener. But the hp rating on the opener is what it is. True, the 3/4 hp is half of what one of the replacement motors is for the shorelander lift I found during a search. But I would be happy gearing it so it would work if that meant it takes double or triple the amount of time. That wouldn't bother me.

The genie website says... "Power: ? HPc Power Plus* provides power to operate doors up to 500 lbs." This tells me it could lift a door that has a dead weight (no springs installed) of 500 lbs. I believe this because why would the company list that 500 lb limit if they were figuring in springs... because you could potentially lift any weight door as long as the springs are adjusted correctly.

Garage door operators (note I said operator not opener as it is the correct term used in the industry) do nothing more then move the door. The springs lift the door. You are completely misreading the Genie info, no it can not lift a 500 lbs door by itself. Lots of people get confused by this but the fact is no it just moves the door. There is a little plastic gear in there that that will strip out the moment you try and it will be all for nothing.

Maybe the motor off an exercise treadmill, from a thriftstore? There's usually a buttload of exercise equipment at thriftstores.

Last time I used mine, it had enough torque to get my fat aft moving. Last time I used it, it was over 3 years ago. It's still in the garage. Come up to Maryland, and you can have it.

Whatever you do, you ARE planning to have it plugged into a GFI, right?

Re: Idea for automatic boat lift on a budget

Just looked at a boat lift motor the other day... 1/3hp DC motor. The motor on the garage door opener was 1/2hp equivalent (which apparently means they have already geared a lesser hp motor such that the output sprocket equals 1/2hp. Even if the lift takes a little longer to go up and down I think it would be worth a shot. The worst thing that happens is it doesn't work and I take it back to the home improvement store where i bought it.

What makes you think the store will take it back after you've monkeyed with it?

Hi you should just get a 2000 or 3000 lbs atv winch it has everything that you need and they work from a 12 volt battery it is simple it is strong and it is made for pulling or lifting heavy loads. Good luck.
