Just by reading all the good advice here I was
able to get my 1973 Mercury 7.5 motor up and
running! Motor had not been run in years when
I got the boat and motor...never worked on an
outboard before...best advice, get a manual!
Motor would not start at all when I got it...
I was gonna just buy a new one in the spring
then found this forum...well I changed the lower
lube, installed an impeller, scrapped the fuel
tank(it leaked)cleaned the old gas out of the
fuel line, cleaned fuel pump, new fuel lines,
rebuilt carb(gas looked like maple syrup in the
bowl)adjusted the float(it was stuck shut).
It started and ran fine on the second pull!
forward/reverse worked too...then it got cold...
Well it is ready for springtime..so for $40 in
parts saved me over $1,000+ for a new one.
This has the Thunderbolt ignition on it..it
can throw a huge spark! not like a lawnmower!
Back to lurking now, thanks!
Rob in Atlanta
