I think of all of you folks as family already, since we all share this obvious need for anything boats.
I also noticed that quite a few of you like music, and some even have alluded to playing some instruments.

My question is how many of you play or have played a guitar, banjo or any other musical instruments?

In boats of course :D

I play guitar and banjo. I've never played either on a boat though.

:D Can't stop laughing over that one! :D

I don't think I've every played on a boat, hopefully that will change soon as I want to live aboard.

There are lots of island parties around here with live music drums and PA and all.

A music teacher told my father the same thing when he was wanting to learn piano, unfortunatly my father didn't try to prove her wrong . Now a days a music teacher is liable to get a big fat lawsuit over telling somebody they are not fit for playing, I happen to think they would deserve a lawsuit . NSBCraig, I don't find it funny.

I piddle around with a guitar, still haven't taken the time to learn chords yet, mainly learned what I know by tab. I thought about taking lessons when I become rich .

Guitar - primarily acoustic. Had a band for awhile but don't really consider myself to be a musician in the sense of those who make a living at it. We wrote all of our own stuff, recorded some, but were always amateurs who gigged for fun. The funny thing is that, after a career of doing other things, I ended up in the music business on the production side, and spent ten years doing that. I like to say that I went crazy and reverted to my 60s hippie roots later in life!

BTW, if you want to know what kind of guitar the boat is my avatar is a replica of, think Tommy Emmanuel!

actually i believe if the kid does not have the talent and love for it. the teacher should tell the parent. then the child and parents decide. if not it is like stealing from the parent. i applaud my teacher.

You make a point there. In my father's case though it was just a one time deal, the teacher just gave him a once over and said he wasn't the right fit for the piano basically, didn't even give him a chance. I figured your situation was the same, I must of been wrong.

All I'm saying is give somebody a chance. When a person's (kid's) confidence gets shot down by the teacher (of all things) then the kid might lose interest in the field they are persuing.

Sorry I went off the deep end earlier .

Re: Iboater profiling?

Wow, Here's a topic that brings back some memories!
I learned to read music at an early age, and a very dedicated music teacher taught me how to play the saxophone when I was only 7 or 8 years old. His favorite artist was Glenn Miller, and the class had regular lessons on jazz. He created a primary school band and I was selected to play tenor sax. Looking back I feel it was a "project" for him to expose the kids to that style. He took particular interest in the 6 or 8 saxophone students, going so far as teaching us jazz numbers not offered to the regular band. I clearly remember the sax players- performing separately from the band- doing some Glenn Miller pieces at school assemblies and concerts in 5th and 6th grade. Personally, I enjoyed playing and stayed with it thru middle and high school- marching, concert, and stage bands. Outside school, I was in a "rock" band with 4 friends for awhile. I played guitar and sax. I think we only ever had one actual paying gig, but it was fun times for sure. Our "big" song was "Venus" HAHAHA! ...... YA BABY SHE'S GOT IT....

Kinda lost interest in playing music after high school and never had much desire to keep it up. I'm sure the sax and a 12 string guitar are still somewhere up in the attic, probably under a buch of other junk I don't need :D.

I totally agree about exposing- but NOT forcing- kids to try music or, for that matter, any other activity they want to experience. My daughter dabbled with flute for a couple years but didn't really enjoy it. She saw some baton twirling and wanted to try. She learned a lot, liked it and twirling competitions became a big part of her life up until she entered college. It taught her discipline and a whole lot more.

Re: Iboater profiling?

It all started with an old acoustic beater with "Texas" burned right into the into the finish.
I progressed to some serious Rock and Rolll when I bought a six pickup Hoffner in the mid 60's.

Now I play banjo, guitar and blues harp, some piano and I am getting away with playing a fiddle for the Bluegrass, Irish and Country rock tunes. I also have electirc guitars and play some classical and spanish, but I still can't read a scratch of music!

I've been at it since about 1960 when I was 9, and finally got to playing in bands around '69-'70. After a while my Brother got into it and learned to play the bass and became quite good at it, he ended up doing openings and breaks for Edgar winter and others when In Canada, although only sporadically.
His son is now a hungry and broke musician too, but he did cut a few records.

We are thinking about doing some bar gigs again, but it probably will stay a dream. There is an awful lot of competition out there today.

I see there is a few of you that have the interest, and I wonder how many have that strange "wanting to be in there" urge, every time some guys are having fun jamming.
I'm buying another Gibson SG and another set of amps and foot pedals this spring and I'm going to give it one more go with my brother and a friend. See what happens.
Maybe we'll get the Ocean Princess contract. :D

As for playing on a boat, I almost always have a guitar handy for those emergency times where one might be needed!

Thanks for the replies and good luck with YOUR dreams too.

Good deal JM. Much the same here, other then the production side, I thought I'd get into the money with the trucking thing but missed that idea by a little, but had a blast sofar. Winding down though and looking forward to retirement messing around in everything!

I am a legend in my own mind with the old rock and blues I get into sometimes. I was never a hippie, but came close man....far out!:D

I guess there's quite a few of us around Iboats after all.

Oh yeah... the avatar looks like a Gibson Dreadnaught copy!

Wrong! Just went and looked, Maton's the brand, Cool!
Going right back to listening to some more of that . ciao.

Re: Iboater profiling?

The older I get, the better I was.

I play ( well, beat at it) accoustic guitar (Martin D-28 Year 1974).

We had a small bluegrass band while in college with then wife on fiddle/autoharp,her brother on bass, fraternity brother on banjo, and myself on guitar/harmonica/mandolin.

We actually got paid several times for weddings, bars, coffee houses, etc. The extra money came in very handily in those poor college days.

However, our chosen fields of study in college took top priority so we never had the dream of going pro in bluegrass. For one thing, we were more entertainers than musicians. Good decision for all of us in the financial outlook to graduate in our chosen professions.

I still host an annual party/festival for the pickers and grinners I've met over the years. This June 27th will be the 30th annual festival at our home. We've had new additions over the years and have lost a few attendees to the Lord.

If I did not host this annual event, there are many persons who would never again see friends they have cherished over these many years.

PS: I still own the guitar/PA amp we bought back then. Fender Deluxe Reverb, all original tubes etc. Any offers? :D

I used to play the sax. Picked one up a few years ago and was surprised at how much I remembered. Now if I just hadn't forgotten so much ...

Re: Iboater profiling?

As kids, (8yrs) brother and I shoved in to a (D Grade) Brass Band...., (left at 17yrs).
It was an adult band: always recruited 4 new kids a year.
I played the Euphonium and him the Cornet.
We had endless outings ranging from attending the Races, Garden Parties, Sundays in the Park Rotunda, Civic Events, Parades, and then came the bi-annual competitions...(we always came last).
We had a proper uniform (long pants too!!) and a neat hat, and we always travelled in a bus.
I learned to read music, although not as good as it could have been....somehow whenever we Marched and Played Colonel Bogey, the Band always stopped about 8 bars before I was ready to finish....could never work out why.....
I did learn how to sort-of-play and display-march tho.
I clearly remember an annual Blossom Festival, and we always marched-played in the parade...and it went on for miles...and for kids trying to carry and play......by the end we were k-nackered.

Cheers
Phillip

Re: Iboater profiling?

I have a Guild D50, a Squier Strat and a P-Bass. I've been playing the Strat a lot lately. Garage Band days and a sorta Company Band deal I played the Bass and a little Rhythm . . . Don't think I have ever played on the boat. I like the idea though . . .

Re: Iboater profiling?

Yup, its a Maton. I don't know the guitar, but if Tommy Emmanuel plays them, they must be pretty good. I guess I kind of think of them as the Martin of Australia.

The avatar photo is from a promotional effort for another Australian artist, who's name I forget at the moment. I saw the pic on the internet and liked it, so here it is!

Of the guitars that I have owned, my favorite was a Washburn D50S. I very foolishly sold it about 12 years ago, and have regretted doing so ever since. The guitar always surprised me, because the Washburn guitars produced after the original company was sold, never impressed me much. I heard several stories about the specific guitar that I had, including one that said it was a prototype for the model, which was later produced in Japan. Right after I bought it, I took the guitar to Mandolin Brothers, in Staten Island, New York, for setup. Even those guys were pretty impressed. So, whoever it is in New Orleans or elsewhere who has my guitar, I want it back!

As for the self impressed guitar player thing - naw, that was never my style. I always did it for fun and all of that stuff would have just made it boring. The band was good enough to play in a few "dives," make a few radio show appearances, and one local TV show appearance, and that was about it. We weren't going to have MTV chasing us around and we weren't about to quit our day jobs. Besides, I ended up spending plenty of time around self impressed jerks while in the production world, later on.
