PUT THE FUEL TREATMENT IN! DOH!!! I brought the boat out of storage and was getting it ready for this weekend. i was digging around in my garage and came across the cans of treatment UNOPENED! last fill-up was in october of last year, I'm going to have a heavy load in the boat. I think i should drain and refill just to be safe. about 40 gal worth. dang, and my truck is a diesel. what do you say?

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. If your going to splash the boat this weekend my hunch is that you don't live in the north land cuz we still have about 2 feet of ice on the lakes. So you probably haven't had the boat laid up for much more than 5 or 6 months, , , I'm betting you'll be just fine. Maybe bring an extra fuel water separator with you just in case theres a little moisture on the bottom of the tank.
If you have time take the boat out for half an hour by yourself just to make sure everything is fine before you load her up with your buds.

extra separator is standard equipment for me, i just was looking at it yesterday as a mater of fact. i figured i would toss it to a stranded boater one day. yeah, SO. CAL. nice weather is about the only thing good here anymore.

Ayuh,... Test run it on the muffs, then pull the filters, 'n dump 'em to see what the gas Looks like...
A Sniff Test will tell ya if it's any good, if it Looks good...

so you're sayin' if it looks like gas and smells like gas its still gas. i'll dump the filters and see tonight. i was more worried about losing some octane. my motor wont like detonation. but it only has been 6 months

That's only 6 months. Petrol without oil in it (aka 2-stroke) should be good for about 12 months if there hasn't been sustained high temperatures. I live in Perth, Aust (very similar weather to SO CAL) and have NEVER put anything but petrol in the tank....

Go out and enjoy the weekend.... Nothing to worry about with your fuel....

I always worry about the gas losing octane too... that's why I use 91 premium when I put up for winter. Don't feel bad we all forget. I filled mine up too much and left the cap tight. Fuel expanded and puked out the vent and stained the swim deck. I was wanting to put a grip coating on anyways. But I bet you will be fine.

They say (whoever 'they' is) that gas begins to go bad after 45 days. That may very well be true, but it isn't bad.

I stored a boat without treating the gas for almost 9 months (not by choice), and when I got around to running it, ran like a champ. Ran it on the muffs for about 15 minutes, checked the separator, which didn't have a drop of water in it. I stored it almost full...85 gallons. Would have hated to toss that.

I'm betting you'll be OK.

After 6 months that gas will only be good on the east coast. 40 gallons, huh? <sigh> bring it here... I'll take it off your hands. We boaters need to stick together...

(keep an extra fuel filter on hand. I think you'll be fine)

Alcohol
Can make a big difference in fuel stored a long time.
Phase separation can be a bad thing.
Dumping the filter is good but sucking some off the bottom of the tank would be better.

I went ahead and siphoned 20 gallons out last night. it looked and smelled fine. it left me with 1/4 tank on the gauge so maybe it wasn't completely full. i'm going to top of with fresh and call it done. I've got weedeater gas for years!

Just throw it in your car!

I have always parked the boat in the garage with less than 1/2 tank and just filled it up when I use it 6-9 months later!

I have NEVER used any STABIL or other snake oil either. I just don't think it's needed for a 6 month layup.......

ymmv.........

car (truck) is a diesel. one down side of it, but you can't equal the pulling power

It doesn't work that way. Octane rating is an indicator of gasoline's resistance to ignition. As gas ages it it becomes LESS ignitible(if that is a word) not more so. Running premium gas and octane boosters on a regular engine is just a huge waste of money...

Top off the tank with fresh fuel. When gets down to around a quarter tank, dump in the remaining older fuel that your siphoned off and top it off again with fresh fuel. When you've gone through that, change the fuel filter and put good fuel in and enjoy the summer.

...Octane rating is an indicator of gasoline's resistance to ignition. ...

Close, but no piece of pie. Octane number is the energy released by the fuel when burnt. There are 2 (main) octane numbers used, 'motor' and 'research'. 'Motor' is the energy actually measured when run in an engine, and the 'research' number is the theoretical energy released. What's posted on a gas pump is usually the average of the 2 numbers. The higher the octane number the more energy released on burning.

As fuel ages it does lose the lighter, more volatile elements and so the octane number does drop, but 6 months in cool weather will not has much effect on it. 2 years in a barge floating around Malaysia, that's a different story!!!!

The interesting connection between octane number and detonation is that as the octane number drops the fuel burns faster, but releases less energy. If the octane number is very low the fuel will burn too fast, and on multiple fronts, and be more like an explosion than a burn in the combustion chamber. That is what detonation is.

....??? Octane number has nothing to do with the heating value of the fuel, or how much energy is in the fuel. Getting more HP from an engine that runs high octane gas is a function of more aggressive ignition timing and higher compression, not from the energy content of the gas.

Reseach octane is determined by running the gas in a variable compression engine at 600 rpm and monitoring for knock. Motor octane determines knock while runing in a variable ignition timed engine at 900 rpm.

I'll have to dig it up, but I have results from a dyno, testing the same engine at the same ignition timing, running 87 veruses 93 octane, and the 93 octane runs had actually lower output than the 87.
