I bought my first Quantum rod last summer when I was living in Colorado and used it once. It used it once for river fishing. 5'6" UL with 4# test. I mostly fished lakes for big Mackinaws ( Lake trout ) so the rod got forgotten. Until this summer when I found myself in NW Arkansas. The rod broke on the third cast. Unfortunately I lost all the paperwork on it in the move. Do you think it would be worth the trouble to raise hell with Quantum or should I use the time fishing. It was not a cheap rod. I have a couple of their reels that I like just fine but this does not instill brand loyalty. Any thoughts would be apreciated. MJ

Forget the paperwork, Moby.

You have a Quantum rod. It broke. Give them a chance to back up their product.

Thanks JB. I enjoy your posts (you have lots ). I think I will shoot another note (no response to the first) and see what happens. Customer service these days is not what it used to be. I'll let folks know of the response. MJ

Where did it break? Tip, near a guide, at the handle or in in the middle between two guides.

It broke about 2' from the tip between two guides.

I was hoping you would say right at the guide. When a break occurs there it is usually because of a poorly prepared guide foot digging into the graphite. When a break occurs right in the middle it is usually because the rod has been nicked at one time right at that point . It don't take much of a nick to cause an ultralight to fail. It could have been from the factory but it probably would have broke on the first fish you caught with it.

Good luck with quantum. They make a nice product.

I am ashamed to admit it but I never caught a fish on it. That's one reason I was not big on fishing the rivers. Lots of pressure on the fish. They had so much stuff thrown at them that I used to see them swimming around wearing little Broncos football helmets. I replaced it with a Berkley Lightning Rod I've had at least 15 years. It has it's third reel on it now. Well used but never abused. I'm too poor to replace nice tackle on a whim so I take care of it. Previous to this I've never broken a rod ( a few tips ) so maybe it's best that I got it out of the way before I hook the real mobyjaws. I really enjoyed your post about the carp. At least you got on TV with a monster. Very cool. Thanks, MJ

I thought a fishing board was what you cooked carp on. You put the carp on a board, put it in the oven at 375 degrees for an hour or so. When it's done you throw the carp away and eat the board. Yummy! MJ

Re: I used my Quantum rod twice and it broke third cast.

I had a new Quantum rod break one time while bass fishing in a stump field. I always rig 3-4 rods when I bass fish and have them ready to pick up at a moments notice and one of the rods was hanging off the side of the boat. Well the boat brushed up against a big 'ole stump and snapped about the first 15 inches off the top. It was my first broken rod ever and I was pretty mad! I packaged the rod up in a cardboard tube and sent it off to Quantum with a note inside explaining what happened and how much I love their products. About 3 weeks later I got a new rod in the mail with a note that more or less said "no problem, happens all the time. Enjoy the new rod." I never once had to talk to customer service or anything like that. Quantum rods and reels are all I buy now.

Thanks for the info. What do I have to lose? The worst they can say is no. Good idea. I like your quote from TR. The carrier I have pictured on my threads is the CVN-71 USS Theodore Roosevelt. Great president and ship. I saw some crazy stuff on that flight deck. I'll post again with Quantum's response. Thanks, MJ.

Re: I used my Quantum rod twice and it broke third cast.

Several years ago, my fishing buddy and I both purchased identical 7' med-heavy rods from Quantum. Both snapped off at the tips. Mine broke while I was reeling in a small walleye weighing less than 2 lbs. My buddy's rod snapped while he was casting a Rapala j-13 jointed minnow. Both rods were less than a month old. Quantum reels are not much better. Out of a total of three I bought, only 1 lasted more than 2 fishing seasons. Even one of those cheap Shimano rod/reel combo's I paid $29.99 at Walmart lasted longer.

I would rather buy something from Fish-Price than have to use Quantum again.

My Spongebob Squarepants outfit is still going strong thank goodness. I still haven't mailed the rod off yet. I did buy a book called "How to Stop Procrastinating" but I haven't read it yet. I'll read it tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up. MJ

Maybe you should get out of the 29.95 price range and buy good equipment. Only then can you judge quality. LOL

You get what you pay for. If you spend 30 bucks on a fishing rod when there are others that sell for several hundred, you can't expect the same performance. I've had nothing but great success with my Quantum rods.

I Say If You Like It Buy It Know Matter If It's Cheap Or Expensive I Don't See The Sence In Paying Hundreds Of Dollars On Rods And Reels I Have 3 Berkly Cherrywood Rods And They Have Never Let Me Down And I Don't Seem To Catch Less Fish Than Anyone Else. I'm Not Saying That If I Was Rich I Wouldn't Buy Top $ Stuff But I'm Not So I Don't To Me Time On The Water Is Way More Important Than How Expensive Your Stuff Is Cause The Bottom Line Is The Fish Have No Idea What It Cost You....

Why Do You CAPITALIZE Every First Letter And Use No PUNCTUATION?

I admit, that's the oddest capitalization technique I've seen, for sure.

spendy rods are nice for touchy fish like crappie but for most others cheaper rods work just fine. I broke my Light weight 7' Lamiglas rod that I used for crappies (got this fine 149$ rod for 3$ as a rummage sale) and replaced it with a cheaper IM6 graphite blank "Gander mountain" rod and I've noticed a HUGE difference in sensitivity while fishing for crappie and my bite to catch ratio has dropped alot. For bass, northern, and walleye I really haven't noticed much difference between expensive and cheap rods, you KNOW when they hit.

Re: I used my Quantum rod twice and it broke third cast.

Both my stepson and myself had Quantum 5'-6" rods and both broke just below the tip while setting the hook on 2-3 pound fish. These rods were on their 2nd day of use and werent over-used on the first day by any means.
I realize these werent $120 rods but there is no reason why they should only last 2 fishing trips and break. There were no chips in the graphite for mine to break as I inspect my gear with anal tenacity. My stepsons I figured he had indeed chipped the graphite, and that was the reason. When mine broke the same day in the same way it really burned my bacon because there was no reason for the failure. I got the feeling Quantum had no desire to produce a low-cost quality rod for the average joe to use. Now that Ive read other peoples similar problems, it reenforces my thoughts.
It shouldnt matter if you pay $29 for a rod or $129, the end result is you should have a usable product in your hands. If Quantum isnt going to produce quality throughout its entire line of products, then they arent getting any more of my respect or money. Is the quality better in a $129 rod? Hell yeah, I would hope so. Should 2 $29 rods break on the same day? Hell no, not with good handling and usage.
I have a few $29-$39 rods that Ive owned for years and I have never had any problems with, and they have been used and used hard.
Like Hellbound said, the fish dont care how much your rig cost and if it has been a durable and usefull rod for multiple years why should you?
