91 degrees.......man that sounds so nice, its 24F/-4C here now....I'm SOOOOOOOO Jealous!!!

Don't take this stuff to hard bud look at it this way you had a good day on the water, you and yours didn't get hurt and you didn't see anyone else get hurt either.....ok, sometimes hurting the kids on the tube has some measure of pleasure in it......but then my kids are 14-20!! I call it paybacks!!

yeah your all probably right . . .

. . . anyway i take the point
Good of you to take the high road. Hard to come on here and get beat up AND admit you may have been wrong. Also hard for us all to comment considering that we weren't there, or have been under all of the same circumstances. We don't know the water or the local customs and flavor. I know for a fact that many of the situations I come across, and even create, would cause an eyebrow or three to raise here. There are some very crowded channel situations I boat in and if I followed as far as was absolutely perfectly safe I just wouldn't go anywhere as someone would fill every single spot I opened up. I also hear a lot of criticism for night boating practices that I do quite often. Some things are frankly different in some places and some water. Doesn't make them right, or even wrong, just different.

With that said, I tell my boys that there are very few situations that stopping doesn't fix. That may have been the right thing to do, but always easier in hindsight. Good on ya mate, and I hope the remainder of your season goes well. Where exactly are you anyway?

Re: i upset a guy on the weekend

sorry guys, we have just had our last weekend of summer, around 30 - 33 degrees celcius and near perfect so everyone was one the water, and just so you dont feel bad for us moving into autumn , winter and spring is probably the best boating of all, warm days cool nights and stable weather, after all the rain and storms , something to look forward to

we Vics hope ya chooks turn into emoo's and kick ya dunny door down! LOL
last day of summer, it's 13degs and 'persisently' coming down,
had one day of 40deg heat and even then we were in Hobart,
bought a new tube and haven't even used it yet,
but you're right...though it's hard to admit a banana bender is right 'bout anythin'..the weather is better around this time of year,
just a quick question
Fev been arrested so far this week?
cheers

ok..l'll translate
"We Victorian ( the BEST State ) GENTLEMEN hope your chickens turn into emu's and kick your toilet door down"
"persisently" in this context means its raining heavily LOL
banana bender is someone from Queensland, if there is anything left there that hasn't been blown or washed away,
a Fev is a local AFL footballer who, for the life of him, cannot stay out of trouble, legal or otherwise been sacked twice now,

just a bit of local leg pullin'
forgive my sins

One of the other Posters mentioned that as the "Give Way vessel" you should have been prepared for the other boats action, was correct as far as their comment went,.

However, if, as the GW vessel, you were going to pass, you should have signaled your intent by giving a blast of your horn (assuming you have a horn that can be heard) which would have alerted the other boat of your presence and intent. (That would be 1 blast if passing to the right, 2 if on the left by our Federal and state regs., your's may be different).

He probably was so intent on his own situation, and the sound of his own engine, that he was unaware of your close proximity, and turned into you because he didn't know you were there. The one finger salute was probably as much of an expression of surprise as it was a comment on your seamanship.

Re: i upset a guy on the weekend

As someone who fishes from a 14' tinny, if a 32 footer passed by so close I got sprayed, I'd be far more than a bit upset. But then again, you won't find me chasing wakes and jumping my boat.

I regularly fish along one local river in my 14' Starcraft V hull, I don't think a week goes by where I don't have some clown buzz by me while I'm anchored up fishing and nearly upset my boat. The channel there is wide, the water is plenty deep. There is also no destination upstream other than a boat launch area. Most boats fly by at full speed only to return minutes later the same way. The river narrows and is no longer navigable after about 10 miles upstream of where we fish.
I anchor off to one side, at least 100' from the channel. When a larger boat passes, even if they're a fair distance off, their wake nearly capsizes a small boat if you can't get it turned into the wake in a hurry. I had one idiot fly by so close one day I was worried that he might run over my anchor lead off the bow. Later, at the ramp, I had to wait for the same idiot as he fought with his wife and the boat trying to get it loaded with his trailer backed in so deep his truck's taillights were wet. He had the nerve to tell me that smaller boats shouldn't fish there, it wasn't safe. I thought that a bold comment to make to a stranger twice his size. He even had to comment on us not waiting our turn to load by loading my boat by hand carrying it over to my trailer. He actually got mad that we didn't have to wait for him to get his boat loaded. If he had not made the comment, I'd have probably helped or at least given him a few pointers but he obviously was an expert seaman.
He was still fighting with his boat and his wife when we drove away. I blew the horn and waved as I pulled out.

No worries, ewenm.

Lessons learned everyday on the water. We were in the ICW couple days ago. I was approaching a bridge, and while slowing down, a guy pulling a skier, in a no wake zone, cuts across my bow, dropping the skier in front of me. I just shake my head. The skier gives me the finger.

OP.... KUDOS on being the bigger man, most in your position would have been all upset at us for pointing a finger at you

It's nice when a person can have an open mind to criticism.... if only we all could :D

Re: i upset a guy on the weekend

the tinny brigade, and i know im generalising , but where i boat they have become a real pain, even PWC,s are showing more manners,

First of all, if you had to ask an internet forum whether you were in the right or not, undoubtedly you already knew you weren't.

Secondly, your statement above clearly shows your bias. No mater that the other guy was a jerk (and he was), you chose to disrespect him.

I have a tinny and a PWC as well. If I'm in open water and I approach a 32 footer and I clearly have the right of way I know that if I don't stop dead he'll hit me because I know that a 32 footer (or any gofast for that matter) won't come off plane for someone so clearly inferior to him.

Same thing on the highway - Hummers and Suburbans will run over a sub compact without giving it a thought.

I own / ride in all types of cars and boats and I see the different way people treat you depending on the size of your ride.

Its not about knowing the rules of the road, or following them, its all about having respect for other people, using common sense and going out of your way to be safe at all cost!

Re: i upset a guy on the weekend

Come on Jim . . . your "bias" is so evident here ^^^^^^ that your post looks like no more than an attempt to pick a fight. The guy has acknowledged that he may have been in the wrong, but I don't agree with almost any of your comments:

I have a tinny and a PWC as well. If I'm in open water and I approach a 32 footer and I clearly have the right of way I know that if I don't stop dead he'll hit me because I know that a 32 footer (or any gofast for that matter) won't come off plane for someone so clearly inferior to him
I have a Tinny and a pseudo gofast, and pilot a 32 footer often. I wouldn't run over any vessel under any circumstance, neither would the OP.

Same thing on the highway - Hummers and Suburbans will run over a sub compact without giving it a thought.
That's ridiculous . . .

There are jerks and good guys operating every single example of any vehicle . . .

Its not about knowing the rules of the road, or following them, its all about having respect for other people, using common sense and going out of your way to be safe at all cost!
Totally agree with that, but the rest of your post assumes very few others do . . . Just not true.

Guys, I focused on this as it is the type of post that ends up getting threads closed. Let's treat each other here as we expect the operator of a 32 footer to treat a 14 ft. Tinny's skipper. K?

Re: i upset a guy on the weekend

I'm not responding to the OP here, just voiceing my opinion. I'm guilty of not being the nice guy when someone puts me and mine in an unsafe position on the water. I pride myself on being a safe a courteous boater. we have rules on the waterway and when people don't follow them, that's when folks get hurt or worse. I've had a few close calls with one of my young-uns either in the water, tubing, or wakeboarding. I have gotten vocal on the water, maybe not the best way to handle things, but if they didn't know the rules before-they dang sure do now. Ripping someone a new "one" today might save someones life tomorrow, I feel that's a worthwhile investment. I wonder if therapy may help me?

Re: i upset a guy on the weekend

There should be 'no wake' rules which cover minimum distances...

Boat distance to:

Land
Docks
Rafts
Other Boats Underway
Beach (unmarked swimming area)
Bouys (Marked Swimming Area

In this case, what is the minimum distance you can be from another boat underway, while creating a wake, in the area where the incident occured?

1) Either the OP was or was not on plane.
2) Either the OP was or was not within the minimum distance allowed to create a wake from the stand-on vessel.

If the passing boat was creating a wake within the 'no wake' limit from the stand-on vessel then the law was not being followed.

Guys, I focused on this as it is the type of post that ends up getting threads closed. Let's treat each other here as we expect the operator of a 32 footer to treat a 14 ft. Tinny's skipper. K?

I will apologize profusely ahead of time if anything I ever say gets a thread closed. I have owned a 30 footer in the past, so I've been on both sides of the fence. I got twofootitis before as well, but in the reverse direction. The 30 didn't meet my requirements all of the time, and it didn't fit into our lifestyle. If it ever did again in the future, I could well afford it so I have no bias against those that do.

My only bias is against people on the water that think they own the place. And that covers cruisers that disrepect tinnys, as well as tinny fishermen that take up the entire channel on busy days.

I travel on business to CA monthly, and the way people drive on the freeways amazes me. I don't boat there, but I can imagine that CA boaters share some of the same traits.

Fact is that I live in NY. Not only are the waterways crowded, but too many of the boat operators are mindless. My comments about getting run over by a 30 footer in my tinny are a sad reality. As an example, last summer I was trolling at about 2 mph and approached the stbd side of a 30 something and at the last minute I had to cut the engine (and tangle the lines) or I would have been dangerously close as he passed by. From HIM I received the finger and a number of deleted expletives and he shouted "get out of my way"!

The channel I boat in is 1/2 mile wide. When I go upriver I stay on the right side within 100 feet of the the edge of the dredged portion. I realize that passing with a 300' margin is a real hassle and very problematic if you are trying to get to the beer party in a hurry, but on a Saturday I can count on the fact that at least one or 2 gofasts will pass me within 100 feet at speed.

Obviously, there are differnt experiences in different parts of the country. But, I stick to the theme of my original post: If somebody gives you the finger, you probably did something that wasn't respectful to the other guy.

I don't know that I would say that "Very few others do", but the percentage is wayyyy to high!

(PS - when I said "run over", I meant "go too close", "pass within a safe distance", or "pass within the legal requirements". I wasn't implying physical contact)
