I Think I Overheated My Motor

Hello,
Did I really screw up or what?

Last weekend, right after it rained for the first time in long time(LA,CA), I decided to take my kids for fishing. When I exited the marina(Marina del Rey), the swells were so choppy that I decided to stay within the marina for safety of my kids. While trolling for few minutes, my high-temp alarm went off(but I didn't know this at the time). I kept trolling for few more minutes and then my motor went dying sputtering. As soon as it died, it produced bunch of white smoke with smelll of burning. As I was investigating my motor, I see a plastic bag stuck on my water intake. There were lots of trash floating around the marina that day right after the rain.

What a day. I finally got towed in.
When I took the cowling off, I saw rear of my motor's paint was yellowish and seemed fried.

Did I learn not to ignore the warning BEEP!

I did a compression check and had a result between 115 and 120 four cylinders. I forgot to mention. I have a 1990' V4 140 VRO(i disabled the VRO and mixed 50/1). It ran very nice and cool and beautifully before this incident happened.

After realizing my stupidity, I would like to find out what I need to get this motor back to normal condition. When I got this motor few months ago, the compressions were between 135 and 140 between all the cylinders.

If you have any insights about what may have happened according to my explanation, I would appreciate it. I'd rather expect the worst than find out as I go.

Thanks.

one another thing.
Does anyone know if the insurance cover for this sort of incident(running into a plastic bag/except my stupidity and ignoring and alarm).
Thanks for all your help.

How much, if any damage would be a hard call. I would do a leak-down test, then pull the cylinder heads for a look.

I am with R.Johnson.
leak down test and pull the heads. check the heads for warping, check the tstats to see if they are stuck open and check the water pump for melting.
good luck and keep posting

Good point Rodbolt,
So easy to focus on the power head that it would be easy to ignor the water pump..
