Re: i think i have found my demon at last

love the idea, but how good are the cam and lifters in them gonna be?
If it's a Truck Running Take Out,.......<br />The Cam,+ All the Lifters will be in Much Better Shape than the cam,+ lifters that you have Now..............<br />And,... A Truck Cam is cut very nearly the same profile as a Marine Cam...........<br />
Will it mount up to my out drive?<br />
Ayuh,.........<br />It's a Small Block Chevy,........... They ALL have the Same bolt holes in the Same places,......<br />For the 262cid to the 400cid,.... The Outside of the motor is the Same,..... The differences are Internal.........<br />
A truck engine though, really, could there be a traditional radiator on it too?<br />
We're talking about swapping Long Blocks here,....... Not Everything under the hood of a Truck....... <br />
What kind of hoist system do i use to get the old one out and the new one in?
When stripped down to the long block,.... You're looking at about 500lbs,... give or take 50lbs.......<br />You might have to get creative,.... A Stout Tree Limb,..?? A Tall Door Casing,..?? The Rafters in Uncle Bill's Barn,..?? The Forklift at the Wharehouse down the street,..??........<br /><br />The engine that you have Now,..... Is a Wore-Out Hurt'n Motor,............And,... You have No History on it......<br />A $500.00 Running Take-out Truck Motor will possibly come with a Running Guarantee.....<br />That's Already More than you have Now..........<br />
And, i mean i always thought i'd need a marine grade eninge? So, Im not opposed to the idea, would love more power just not quite ready with the knowledge on putting one in. However, im sure if i searched a little more here in this forum i could get it done.
All the answer you seek are in the Archives here at iboats,..... I've written quite abit of it,..... What you Don't Find,.......<br /><br />Come on back,+ Ask.............. ;)

Re: i think i have found my demon at last

Hey 86, I have the same small block Chevy. Swapping was a piece of cake. The 350 parts are more common than the 305. I have used a tree in the yard with a chain lift (chain lift was $50 at the local auto parts store). The engine stand for working on the engine out of the boat was also $50. (You'll need it.) I bought the long block rebuilt but a good running truck motor whould be also a good start. I can pull the engine in my 88 Bayliner in less than 2 hours. I spun a rod bearing in my old 5.0 and had the crank out in 2 hours (using the tree). Really, if you are at all mechanical dont be afraid. The boat is 10 times easier to do major work like this than the car. By the way, I did have to remove one piece if the boats interior. The front of the engine compartment is a plywood frame covered in carpet and wood screwed to the boat floring and the seat frames on the sides. 2 minutes with a cordless Philips and the front of the engine compartment wes off. After the first time I put new screws in from the outside to make subsequest removels (which I have done several times) easier. The screw heads hide in the carpet knap and you really dont see them anyway.

bondo, vatter and the rest of these guys are right on. Go for the swap, take your time, watch what yer doing and if ya get stuck just ask. You'll be back on the water in no time, and have a great handle on the mechanics of yer boat.

And how old should i look for in a running take out motor? since ofcourse it ewill be used.<br /><br />thanks <br /><br />------------------------------------------<br />86bayliner<br /><br />"direct me to the proper v8 please"

Re: i think i have found my demon at last

The first engine I built was a chevy 350. When I adjusted the valves, I had them set way too tight. When It was all said and done, I wore a lobe off the brand new cam I installed. I purchased another cam and lifter set and installed and adjusted valves, changed the oil. Fired up engine and she ran great, only thing was I only had about 5 pounds of oil pressure. When it wore the lobe off cam and cupped the lifter my oil filter clogged up and the by-pass valve started letting metal through the oil system, and taking out my main crank bearings and rod bearings. I ended up re-pulling engine and replacing the bearings. I strongly agree with Bondo on getting another engine. How long did you run the engine with the lifter cupped? I learned my lesson the hard way, any engine I build know I make sure the valves are set on the loose side, so I can hear em rattling, then I adjust them.

Re: i think i have found my demon at last

86, the basic block for an automotive engine and a marine engine are the same. Such the engine is known as a Chevy 350 and not a Bayliner 350 or Merc 350. The difference is whats in the engine. In a marine engine they put brass core (freeze) plugs, heavy duty valve train and rings. In most truck engines they put a similar valve train and rings, not usually the brass core plugs. The next difference is the cam. The cut on the truck cam and the marine cam is similar. This is something relatively easy to change while the engine is out anyway. Cost about $200 for a new cam and lifter set. Most truck engines are also the heavy duty 4 bolt main type blocks as well. This is not absolutely necessary as many marine small blocks are two bolt main types any way. The truck heads and marine should be the same. All of the rest of the bolt on stuff, oil pan, valve covers, intake manifold, carb, water pump, timing cover, exhaust manifolds, fuel pump, fly wheel, starter, block drain valves, etc. Anything that bolts on should come off your old engine. Many of these items are strictly marine (all fuel and electrical items especially). These items are what makes a marine engine a marine engine, not the cast iron block.

Re: i think i have found my demon at last

One other thought when you are looking for an engine. In 86 I think they used the olded Chevy blocks with the multi piece rear main seal and the heads with the valve covers which bolt on through 4 bolts around the rim of the valve cover. Get the same block style engine. I am pretty sure the flywheel bolt pattern is different if you get a newer engine with the single piece rear main. Also, the valve covers wont mount if you get the nwer style engine, the heads for it have valve covers which bolt through the center of the valve cover. I think a good running engine out of a bone yard of the older style block is going to be hard to come by. If you get the newer style, be prepared to buy a few more not so cheap parts like a flywheel and engine coupler.

Hey, just a thought but u may need to pull the motor anyway to change the cam depending on how deep your motor sits in the engine compartment and if there is enough room to pull the cam all the way out. It sits about an inch or so below the centerline of your circulation pump I believe. Also be very careful not to nick your cam bearings with the lobes when removing or installing the cam. best way is to take a couple of 3 or 4 inch bolts and screw them into the front of the cam so u have a handle. Another thing...dont go crazy on the grind of the new cam or u could have problems such as broken valve springs, retainers or holy pistons from too much lift, stay under about 480 on the lift. Always use new lifters with a new cam. I think the cam change is the way to go (2 bills, half a day and a broken knuckle or two) as long as the rest of the motor is sound. And u get to choose it's new personality.
