I screwed up

Was working on my 90 hp 1984 Johnson and ran it with out water. It ran for a few minutes then began to smoke. I suspect I burnt the impeller. Tried to run with water on and nothing came out the pee hole. She still starts and runs but I think I cloggged the water system with burnt rubber. Does any one know what to do now? How much damage have I done. I'm pretty sick at my self any help would be appriciated.

Re: I screwed up

Start with dropping the lower unit and getting to the impeller. See how much is missing and go search for it in the cooling system. Replace water pump then check compression. REMEMBER TO USE THE MUFFS next time.

First check the compression, if that is good then put in a new water pump. Look for any damage or extra pieces of impeller when you drop the lower unit. Back flushing the motor to clear the passages would not hurt. It the compression test are low pull the heads and look for damage there. If you are lucky it will only be a head gasket or a warped head.

Well here is a photo of a "new" impellar that went to pieces on the first use....

It was replaced for free (except for my personal labor) and there were a few OEM that just fell apart..... I blames old stock on the shelves.
