Re: I opened valve cover

You can check for a bad cam by removing the intake manifold, loosen the rocker arm nut on the suspected valve(s), remove the push rod, and then extract the lifter(s). Check the bottom of the lifter, if the cam is bad, the bottom of the lifter generally shows a severely worn and concave surface as well. You can then peer down the lifter bore to see the cam lobe. If the valve was not moving very much, the wear will be obvious.

as i said in another post , i think im gonna put the new lifter in, hope that the cam "will" have some bump long enough for me to hit a few waves, While i take the time to save up and find another engine to install.

i thank you all for the input

------------------------------------

86bayliner

If you pushed on the push rod end of the rocker arm as the engine was turned over and felt little or no "bump" as you previously indicated, I think you are wasting your time replacing a lifter. Even a collapsed lifter will still provide the same amount of lift as a good lifter if the clearance caused by the collapse is removed as you did. At any rate, when you get the old one out, examine the bottom. It will be an indicator if the cam lobe has gone south. If one is bad, there are likely to be others headed in the same direction. A bad cam is certainly no reason to scrap an engine if it is otherwise in good shape.
