Hello again dumb question for the day is there a difference in the lifespan of a transom between I/o and Outboard .I have been reading allot of posts about transom rot and am curious as to the length of time a transom lives and what are the signs of a bad transom . I have a 1974 Fiberform with a 165hp inline merc and 165hp leg?

Re: I/O Versis Outboard transom rot??

The core (wood) of a transom will rot because water was allowed to get to it. After a while fungus starts working on the wood fibers which is the rot we all hate. The root cause is not age but the intrusion of water as a result of poor manufacturing practices or someone drilling holes into the transom and not using the proper sealers to keep water out. The rot does not know if the boat is outboard or I/O powered.

You can detect rot by listening to the sound that is made when you rap/tap the transom with a hammer or mallet. A clue for outboards is actual flexing of the transom or movement of the motor at the mounting bolts. You then can drill a few test holes in the inside of the transom to confirm.

GLUTTON4PUNISHMENT,

If you are in doubt about the things mnounted to your transom. Remove them and use 3M 5200 sealant when you reinstall them.
