I have a 1987 OMC cobra stern drive unit powered by a 2.3 litre. Had it stored over the winter with the drive in the down position. Raised it up to take it out to the lake worked just fine. Once out there I could not get it to go back down.

Possible reasons or suggestions?

Switch is the most likely cause. At the switch there'll be three wires (I forget colors). 1 is ground and the other 2 are hot. 1 for up and 1 for down. Try conecting the wires together and see if it raises the drive. If it works that way you know it's the switch.

When you pushed the down button, did you here a click or anything?

Connected the wires together and it will only raises it up. But won't go down from the switch. I tried also crossing over at the solenoids and the up & down function works at that point. So I'll pick up a new switch tomorrow. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Your test didn't prove the switch was bad. Does the down solenoid click when you hit the down button?
You are going to be surprised to find that switch is not easy to find.

mine did the same and it was just the plug from the solenoid to the trim pump. wiggle it. I found this on someone elses thred but I cannot remember who posted it. It has to do with the neg wire connection
