16” of heavy/wet snow on Monday. The power went off in the AM and hasn’t been back. There was a travel ban in place for a while. To top it off, a tree fell across our road and nobody can get past. The road has not been plowed because of the tree.

Needless to say, work on the extension bracket has been on hold.

Think of it this way, pot life of resin will be longer, enabling longer working time, everything thing will be waiting for the power to return.

It appears that the town I live in can’t get their act together in responding to a snow emergency. So, I decided to wire my oil burner to the generator, because it could be a few more days without power. Things are warming up, now that the main heat is going again.

I just hope my fuel supply holds out for another day or two.

The town put on their website a status. . .
only 50% of the roads have been plowed. 75% of residents are without electricity.

Ted, if need be, I can tell you how to mix acetone and engine oil to run thru the oil burner. you will need to watch the exit temps.

Quick Update . . .

It seems like emergency preparedness is not a thing where I live. I know the severity of the weather has been a factor, but these type of weather incidents happen every few years, so there is a lot of history to learn from. Perhaps learning is not a thing either. It will be interesting to see what gets written about the response.

My project has been on hold and will probably be so through the weekend. My boat is quite buried under 1-2’ of snow. Perhaps March will be a time of melting, as there is still lots of work to be done in the engine bay and transom area.

I am hoping my engines get delivered in the next week or so. It would be good to know they are at the shop and I can focus on some of the details about prepping for installation. I know the shop will do most of the work, but I want to facilitate matters as best I can.

Project for the day will be to clear our road, since the town is not showing good signs of progress, and see if I can get some gasoline. We were planning to go to CT this weekend, but cannot leave the house until we know the power is back on. BTW - the oil tank (heating oil) is down below 1/4 full. Not sure how long the next delivery may take.

Ted, doubt anyone will write anything unless you do it.... and it appears from your post that your local municipality crews may not care enough.

in the summer, grass grows......in the winter, snow falls. not sure what is so hard about that to plan for by the local council/board/etc. to get a power restoration and snow removal plan in place. most of today's elected officials are post turtles. and have changed appropriations

this was the power outage map 12 hours ago. its down to 69k vs the 273k it was 3 days ago


Maybe after the boat, we get a Vote for Ted campaign?

some of the municipalities that I lived in had plow rigs for the garbage trucks. they would just leave the truck full of garbage (ballast) and hook up the plows and start clearing. no salt spreader, that was a couple of 2-ton cab and chassis with a custom box. saved us tax payers a ton of funds over dedicated plow trucks with more funds going back into the community amenities.

regarding waste oil and acetone. do a bit of googlin' and you find that is more common than you would imagine (was something we did at work in the service bay 20 years ago)

My municipality doesn't even own plow trucks any more. They subbed it out at $200/hr and we got guys trying to plow 2 feet with a half ton... came out lovely. I feel you Ted.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot..... growing up plowing snow when Dad couldnt take care of the local businesses, I wouldnt try to plow more than 6" with a half ton, you cant keep your speed up to get the spoil piles high or toss the snow far enough to keep drifting down

If I wind up staying here and not moving south a few things I’m going to add:
Whole house generator to run off natural gas; I currently have a B&S 5,000 watt unit that will run essentials but have to have enough gas in hand in case of an outage. I could probably convert the Briggs to run on Nat gas but that don’t think these emergency generators are really designed for constant use, not without an oil change every 50 or so hrs.
Bigger 2 stage snow blower to supplement my little single stage
Light weight plow for my jeeps, I have front hitches for both of them…
