Sounds like you have the OMC stringer drive bu we will see whn you get your pictures.

I would drill some holes around the area of the motor mount and see what the condition of the wood is. If it looks like that wood is good, you may be able to soak the lag holes with a penetrating epoxy which is an epoxy resin/sovent mixture like a Rot Doctor product to strengthen that area. I have mixed up my own concoction with West System epoxy and MEK. By thinning the epoxy, it allows it to penetrate the damaged wood.

If your drive is indeed the stringer, your stringer blocks need to be in very good shape since the thrust of the motor is going through those blocks

Mine has two huge gears (one on either side of the outdrive). So what's the deal ? Is mine some kind of funky system ? It says OMC plain as day on the outdrive.

Ayuh,.... It's a Stringer,... It's about the Funkyest.......

By the way, I lied.
There is only one big gear on the port side of the outdrive.

Be aware you probably have two problems...your stringer problem and the rubber boot that goes around your drive more than likely has a hole in it.

You'll be able to see in the pics tomorrow that the port stringer is great but the starboard stringer may have some damage. The guy that re-glassed it didn't do a very good job on that side and some of the fiberglass has "wrinkled" and let moisture in. I'm hoping it's just in that area....it appears that's the case but, of course, I won't know for sure until I get in there.

If the boot has a hole in it how do you fix it....or can you?

You just replace the boot. Very easy job if you don't have to remove the drive. On mine...years ago with the older stringer, I pulled the drive. Not sure with the model that you have.

Yes, you have an OMC 'Stringer' drive. Was a little confused when you said there was 2 large gears as the stringer drives only had one as you mentioned above. (Fibber! :p :D) If the transom boot is leaking then replace it. I haven't heard of a repair yet that worked. I replaced mine without removing the drive (I have a '75 electric shift) but pulling the drive is no biggie either.

May be a good idea anyway as you can replace the impeller while it's off (if needed) and service the tilt clutch assy and check the pivot bearings. Check the screw holes around the boot when you get the old one off and see if there is any wet/rotten wood in the transom.

As mentioned above the motor/drive puts alot of stress on the mounts, so your stringers must be in good shape with these drives else it might try to climb up to the front of the boat! If that starboard stringer has more than just a little rot around the lag bolts, it needs to be cut out and replaced properly.

Ok folks, here we go.

Obviously this is the boat.

The outdrive. And yes I know I need a new prop.

This is the side that leaks.
They had put sealer around where the boot mounts to the transom. A couple of weeks ago I added some caulk on top of the sealer just to make sure it wasn't leaking around this area. It's not the prettiest job in the world but it works. You can also see they put sealer on and around each bolt.

Starboard side transom.

I felt around the opening and the transom in that area is great.
