I/O 18 ft. Does it sit too low in the stern?

Possibly.

But, that's not the way to do it. You're risking damage to your boat, you're not accounting for places in the hull way forward and you're not getting enough pressure on whatever is leaking.

With the boat floating, and the engine off, you can actually see the water come in to the bilge: that will tell you where it's coming from - literally starting with what direction. I've heard of boats taking water on from the bow eye connection way up front; which you really wouldn't be able to fill the boat up enough to see that (again; without risking the damage).

Not to mention you now have water in areas that shouldn't have water

Added water to inside of boat hull up almost to the plywood floor. 3 drip spots at about 1 drip/30-60 seconds. could that have caused 6" of water on the floor of the boat in an hour in the water?

Bad, bad idea. Anyone reading this thread, please never do this to your boat.

Ach….I’d say…if there isn’t any water coming in through any area that is shouldn’t….it’s very common for old school light built boats like this to sit heavy at the stern…especially with a full tank of fuel and the largest engine option. Even my 2003 campion 18ft v8 sits so low at her stern. The wee 40 year old cvx16 with her 150 v6 merc…sits with her bow high out the water too.
I’d say she looks swell there !!

Took the boat back to the lake and backed the trailer in until we had a leak.
The leak is coming out the end of a straight metal piece with screws mounted to the stern , left of the motor. It is very gummy/black on the end of the piece closest to the motor.

That sounds like the transom boot/seal. A pic would verify. Easy repair if that's it.

The water appeared to be streaming from the right side of that metal piece below the transom seal.

suggest you buy a new boot
remove the drive and do a drive service
with the drive off, remove the old boot and inspect the transom
if the transom is good, replace the boot
re-install the drive

go to www.sterndrive.info for videos on removing the drive

be very very very carefull with the shift cable. that little beauty is now $950

Took off the speedometer. Put a hose to the holes. Water poured in at the same spot as it did when we took it to the lake. Removed, glued and rescrewed speedometer. Will test with hose and lake. Hoping this will be the answer. Thank you for your responses.

Took it back to the lake. No leak from speedometer so continued to lower into lake. Water poured in from bottom of transom seal. So... is this something we can do ourselves....

Which video is it? I looked at several. We are figuring out how to handle the outdrive with what we have. Probably will need to rig a stand to set it on.
