Hi everyone just got a hold of my first boat its a little project not bad but just some elbow grease i guess.. I just got a mid 60s 28 ft. pace maker all wood. it is actually a old coast guard boat. does anyone have any tips on what i need to do to the outside of this to get it going. i have never delt with a wooden boat. so if anyone could help like what kind of paint and clear coat what do i need to do to swell this. thank you for taking a look. have a great day and be safe out there.

I'd say you need to reef out her seams and give her the ol' caulk; the sort that will ooze out a bit as she swells. Maybe some cottom packing in spots, too. It's carvel planked, true ? as many Pacemakers were. Hit her with the sprinklers on the outside for a few days before launch with some wet burlap bags in the bilge. Any help ?

Enjoy

Wooden Pacemaker.... Before I did anything cosmetic I would check for cracked /broken ribs at the turn of the bilge in the aft 1/3 of the hull. I'll almost guarantee the transom has already been replaced (that's a good thing).

How long has she been out of the water & what do the seams look like? - Need these answered in order to recommend what to do. - Don't go overboard with the caulking, this boat is fairly light in the planking thickness & you don't want to damage the seams & planking.
As for what kind of paints & varnishes to use I would recommend good quality oil base enamels (no 2-part poly stuff or latex) and traditional 'spar varnishes'. These will will be the easiest to work with year to year (I can get into details if you need).
