We bought our first boat which turned into a nightmare. We took boat out for the first time and boat ran but went nowhere. A gentleman told me to check my clutch dog and forward gear. It did drive backwards though. It was a big let down. The parts were all chewed up so the guy was right. I got used parts from a dismantlers and put the on. Boat now drives forward but with a loud slamming noise. The boat engines seems to come forward alittle everytime it slamms. it increases with speed but decrease when reducing speed. It seems to increase by hardness and loudness when i increase speed. does not happen in reverse. Please someone help my family go boating. We cant afford a mechainic so i will try to fix once someone points me in right direction.

Ahoy, James and Keli. Check the linkage from your controller to the shift rod. Sounds like it is trying to jump out of gear. If the linkage needs adjusting that is good news. The bad news is that it may be self destructing again as it did before you bought it, and I don't know why unless you have a badly bent driveshaft or some other fault with the gearbox that you missed before.

I have to believe that the person who sold you the boat knew it was broke and ripped you off. Really angers me.

Good luck.
JB

James, if you replaced the clutch dog are you sure you got the shifter horseshoe anchored into the bottom of the gearcase. The earlier ones you had screw in bracket that use to mount it. The newer ones like yours(as long as someone didn't swap it for an older gearcase) had an oring sealed set screw that went through the gearcase at the base of the gearcase. Lot of time this wont line up and you miss the hole in the shifter HS. This will cause it not to go all the way in gear.
