help, I'm looking at purchasing this item at a great clearance price ($100 new in box). Before I do, however, I want to know if anyone out there has any stories, good or bad, about this item ? ? ?
Thanks

Re: I NEED HELP Hummingbird 3d Paramount

I just trew one away and replaced it with an Eagle Ultra Classic. Had a Humminbird 3D Vista also, trew it away too and replaced with Eagle. I contacted Humminbird service department and informed them of problem (both units would collect moisture in lens, fog up) and they informed me that if I sent the item in they would repair it for $158.00 or I could buy one of their newer models. Just for grins, I contacted Eagle service department and told them that my Eagle Ultra Classic had similar problems. They responded immediately and informed me that the Eagle should not have fogged due to their design but if it did, send the unit in and they would repair it and all I would have to pay is shipping.
I currently have four boats ranging from my 14 ft Sea Nymph to my 24 ft Mako and have Eagles on all of them. I know there are many Humminbird fans out there and I probably just got hold of a couple bad units, but, I wasn't too satisfied with their service policy.

Keep the bait in the Slick.........

Re the fogging up problem on Humminbird FF's
I have a 350 tx and have the fogging up problem. It goes away when the sun shines on it but is always there when its cool. I asked a Humminbird rep at a boatshow here in New Zealand about this fogging problem and she said it was a problem peculiar to NZ because of our humid climate and said I should store it in the hot water closet. Its been in there for a few months now so I will see how it goes in two weeks when I start using it again but it sounds like I was fed a line of BS about it being a NZ climate problem.
I would also be interested to know how the 3D sounder went, I was thinking of getting one for setting cray pots but I don't think I will use HB again. Saying that $100 USD is about 30% of what they sell for here so at That price I would probably try one out.

I am not a hummingbird fan, just got a great deal on one. I am looking for a user manual for a hummingbird Portrait or similar (sure functionality is relatively the same), anybody got one I could get a copy of? How bout you folks that kicked your HB to the curb, still have your manual?

Thanks

Our marine division crew boat has a humming bird mounted on it . We have sunk this boat twice... the last time it was under water for over 8 hours when we lifted it out of the water with the crane the depthfinder was still on. It has not missed a beat since ....go figure

Just a side note about Humminbirds. Have you seen that many of the fishing shows with pros, amateurs and locals alike, are using the Humminbirds?

I know that a lot of that stuff is part of the advertising and I look for that in the credits or commercials. Its about 50/50 half the time they are credited and half not. Still doesn't mean they didn't get it for free!!!

Two shows really stood out to me, #1 show had the name taped out so you couldn’t see it but you could still tell it was a hummer, its not hard. They were showing it up close talking about the need for good electronics and pointing out the very clear baitfish, fish and structure.

#2 Name not blocked out and it was a segment about electronics and essentially saying and showing the same as #1. Now hummer could have paid for their name being showed on this one but maybe not, no way of knowing it was not in the credits.

What do you all think? Are they getting better?

Somebody must like them they seam to be everywhere, taking up a lot of store shelf space, they’re on the fishing shows and now putting them on new boats (of several manufactures) as standard equipment. You wouldn't think the boat manufactures would want to have a lot of them coming back under warranty. It would not be good for the dealers either, they wouldn't want to hear a lot of complaints or have to schedule a lot of service repair.

So what gives here, there seems to be a very mixed story here. What is the real truth?

The boat I just ordered has one as part of the standard package, I have baseball bat in hand ready to hit a home run because I will not stand for a cheap poorly made fish/depth finder. I don't have to have top of the line but it must be a good one or it will be sitting on the dealer’s service counter. After the amount of money I'm spending I will not put up with fogging or any other quirks I've heard of!

What do you think?

 :(

I never had a problem with mine. Until one day rough water everything got wet, I got the boat in my driveway and noticed it was fogged up, I have leather seats they were hot from the sun so I put it face down for about 2 hours, it cleared up and nerver had a problem with it since. ;)

ultra, didn't ck this forum in a timely manner... anyway, i noticed my HBwideview was fogged up last time out, but then i had taken 4 huge rollers that came over the windshield on my f/s shortly b4 that time. the fog disappeared in the heat of the day. i didn't even think about leaving it out in the sun to dry internal moisture (like the earlier post) but i'll see how that workz

Not a big Hummingbird fan. I play in salt water, and to be honest, the salt just eats these things up. I do know a friend who keeps a small boat on a fresh water lake in middle Georgia who has had no problems with his hummingbird....

In my opinion, Humminbird is the Bayliner of the depthfinder world.

The have over half of the total market, and make money by selling tons of them. They work out deals with Wal-Mart and boat owners, which gets them more market shares.

Most are good, some are bad. But I see very few people buy them a second time, unless they get a very good deal.
