I messed up my 35hp Merc.

Long story short, took my 84 smokercraft (w/ 84 2 stroke 35Hp Merc) out in October for early goose season, general season was about a month away and so I didn't think I'd need to clear my fuel lines and, I let it set. Welp we had a cold snap here in Tennessee and they don't winterize their fuel. It gelled and wouldn't start on its own. Squirting fuel on the carb got it to turn over.

Initial Symptoms: pumping primer bulb would spill fuel out of the fuel bowl over flow. I pulled the carb, removed fuel bowl cleaned meter and float. Found pieces of the infamous fuel line deteriorating. Cleaned fuel filter same deal. Boiled the carb. Replaced old gas can with new can and new fuel. I did not change the fuel line and primer bulb (I know prob just contaminated it again)

Current symptoms: engine starts after priming fuel bulb, revs high then shuts down. I can sometimes get it started again by priming again.

What I plan to try next: replace fuel line and primer bulb, clean and boil carb.

My question: does this sound like a stuck meter again? What carbs interchange with the 35 Merc 2 stroke? I saw on marketplace a 50hp will lower units interchange?

Anything else I should try and check?

TIA!

84 smokercraft, 84 Merc, 2 stroke 35hp.

Welcome
Gasoline doesn't gel in the cold

Motor was running and then it wouldn't. Gas poured out of carb so you rebuilt the carb. Now it still won't run. Need to clean the carb more and check adjustments

I have the same motor. I’ll start with, I never liked mercureys much. Mine has struggled to idle properly for awhile now. Once past idle it’s fine. Keep in mind that I am a marine mechanic and have rebuilt hundreds of carbs Of all kinds. This one bothers me, a lot. Been through it three times as of now. Ugh.

Ok now motor runs till it's warm and then dies. Now when priming it's spitting fuel out of the overflow. I wonder if that fuel pump diaphragm is going out and putting debris in the line? I removed carb side line and tested, it's pumping fuel. How is that driven?

Any guidance on what to do next? It seems like once it gets hot it dies out. Also not circulating water. Impeller was replaced last year.

Fuel coming out of the overflow means the float level is set to high, needs to be lower

Ok I'm assuming easiest way to adjust is to pull the carb, hook up to the fuel line and adjust till it doesn't spray when I pump the primer bulb?

No
All carbs are adjusted the same way and @racerone advise if I mis-speak
The carb should have a spec distance. Most are adjusted placing it upside down and measuring.

Don't just bend but make sure to bend tang in correct place

As example, the is a Rochester
