Re: I just joined the failed Carlisle crowd

Hey 05, just did the same, thought I was OK, new boat, just one year old, checked air, Bla Bla Bla, took a trip last week, blew 2 Carlisle's coming home. Good thing I was traveing with my brother (used his spare), or else I would still be on the highway.

Replacing all five Carlisle's this week. Spent too much on the boat to risk any damage.

Maybe the sport trail is better than the radial, anyway good luck.
Spud

Re: I just joined the failed Carlisle crowd

Again I have to ask this question, now that spud is talking about 5 Carlisle radials on his trailer...was I grossly misinformed at one time, or is it a bad idea to have radials on a tandem? I was always told that radials are best for a single axle, but their softer sidewalls can't take the dragging motion that comes with turning a set of tandems, so tandems a better suited for bias ply tires. Am I wrong? I have to wonder if these Carlisles are failing because they are being consistently put to the wrong application. Then again, why on earth would a trailer mfr install them on a tandem as OE equipment if they are a bad plan? Surely they would know this if anyone would, right?

So tell me everyone, am I alone in how I'm remembering this radial/bias ply choice thing?

Trial and error Craze....

Just keep a close eye on them. That's the key.
I was also told a radial should NOT go on a tandem due to the turning etc... Another reason why I went to radial on my single axle.

I won't buy Carlisle again. Too many people had the same or similar problems with them. That has to tell you something.

As far as trailer manufacturers and which tires they use? I'm betting they get a deal or sponsor on certain brands.

H.

Not an expert, but I worked several 3-axel equipment trailers that were 50,000 lb. rated. The trailers ran 12 radials and we expierianced only "normal" failures ie: running over sharp objects.

I'm amazed on the number of Carlise tire stories that are posted ... I have 4 of 'em on my tandem axle. they have been there since 2000 and still look good. They have seen about 10,000kms of road and I have had no problems, Just did a 200 mile trip last weekend with +90* temps... now the Goodyear Wranglers on my Explorer that Ford replaced the Firestones with have been a absolute POS. We all make a judgement on products based on what we hear and what we experience...

I lost two Titan ST radials within 200 miles of each other and they were nearly new. They might have had 3,000 miles on them. Both suffered major belt separations and deformed the tire, causing SERIOUS trailer wigglage. The first one died on the way to Lake St. Clair in Detroit and the second died on the way to Florida. I replaced them both with a no name as I was desperate. We'll see how they hold up- can't be any worse than the Titans. Marathons seem to get a lot of good press but I know guys who have lost them too. Trailer tires just suk!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

UFM82

Re: I just joined the failed Carlisle crowd

(I posted this response in another discussion by accident. I'm copying it to this discussion as I had originally planned)

Hello all. I've read with much interest all the information on Carlisle tires since they came with my Tennessee Trailer when I purchased my boat and I was preparing to drive from Omaha, NE to Warsaw, MO to do some boating down at Lake Truman and Lake of the Ozarks. They are the Carlisle Radial Trail size 215/75/14 ST tires and are made in China.

I am religous about checking and maintaining the proper cold air pressure of 50 psi. I just came back today from my trip which was 777 miles round trip driving an average of 65 mph.

Luckily, I had no problems at all. The tread still looks like new and the sidewalls look good with no warping or bulges. The total weight of my boat and trailer with 30 gallons of fuel is 3660 lbs. I pulled the trailer with a 2003 Dodge Quad Cab with the 4.7 liter V-8 (O/D turned off) and averaged about 12 mpg on the highway (lots of hills on Hwy 65 to Warsaw, MO).

Before this road trip I had put on about 300 miles towing locally. So far, I can't complain about these trailer tires.

I'm not trying to stick up for Carlisle or sing their praise. I just wanted to report real world findings from my trip.

Regards,

Steve

Re: I just joined the failed Carlisle crowd

I have tandem trailer with Loadrite tires and I think each tire has a rating of 1650#. If one tire goes, is the other one on the same side going to explode?

i think i dont have problems because i have 15in H rated 2400 pound tires on a single axel trailer with a load of less than 3800 pounds

it puts me 1000 pounds BELOW the max of 4800 pounds

i have had chinese loadstars for the last 3 years and some other brand x tire for 7 years before that its hard to believe anything could be of lower quality

i was at the ramp today and saw a lot of tandem trailers with really big boats and 14in wheels with 1600 to 1800 pound rateings i dont no what there weight is but in general the tires look to small

if this is the norm on tandems i can see why so many tires fail

tommays

I've heard not to put any products such as tire shine, etc. on trailer tires. Anyone know why. I just bought 2 Carlisle 20514 radials for my trailer, and I want to maintain them as best I can.

No, but stop and change it as soon as you can safely pull over. I had a brake problem and had to remove one wheel to move the trailer. I trailered about eight miles (at a greatly reduced speed) on three tires. The single tire was not damaged. Mine are Loadrite also.

"the tire will be used for a spare only." I'd toss it and buy a new spare. The only thing worse than a blowout on the roads is a spare with no air or one that blows out while you are trying to limp back home on it.

Well, you have to figure 1800 x 4 is 7200 lbs. so that's a sizable load. My boat sits on a tandem with 4 x 1800 and the boat weighs in at #5230 so thats a signifcant margin of safety. FWIW, my trailer has been run on C rated radials for the past 4 years and has covered roughly 10K miles with nary a problem.

Re: I just joined the failed Carlisle crowd

I had a Carlisle blowout on our popup trailer. It was the 2nd trip in it and it was purchased brand new. No more than 500 miles on the tires. The trialer is stored in the garage when not in use and I checked the air pressure before I left. The darn thing blew at 65 mph and shredded the plastic wheelwell.

I have since replaced the tires with Goodyear Marathons. Unfortunately, our new boat/trailer has Carlisle tires. I will be keeping a close eye on them.

I have a tandem axle trailer....so I wonder if they will give me a problem anytime soon? Just another thing to worry about.

Re: I just joined the failed Carlisle crowd

:( Had three blow outs in about five hours with Carlisle tires honest I know sounds like a story but true. I used a friends trailer new trailer maybe 400 miles total on tires I was going to do a dump run got about five miles from house blow out no big deal had floor jack changed tire on my way. Got to dump unloaded on my way home got another one no more spare called friend that owned trailer he had another one so he brought it to me changed that one. Finally at his house we were looking at tires on both his trailers tires looked great but his son was there and on the trailer I used that had the blow outs he touched the value stem and it broke off so now I changed all my stems. So I really cant blame the tires but when I replace tires I do go with the Goodyear tires because they are load rated I have had good luck with them so far. :)
