Now that you've cut thru the cured hard shell, that foam is now open cell. I wouldnt let it get wet before you paint it. Paint it really well, may seal it up good enough.

Well, here's today's update.

I had another medical emergency yesterday morning. :faint2:

Managed to get through it without going to the ER this time. Luckily. I'll reveal this much... among other issues and disabilities, I have a condition which can make me go permanently blind with little or no warning.

The drug which is used to treat the condition is a powerful steroid which has some seriously bad side effects. Been on it over 6 months so far. This time. And tapering the dosage down gives even more side effects. Vicious.

Anyway, I saw the docs today and they upped my dosage in order to stave off another flare up. And they told me that if I have symptoms again to GO to the ER fer cryin' out loud! When symptoms show, it's time to GO! :bolt:

Will stay at the higher dosage for a month then start tapering again. And round and round we go.

So no work on the boat or the tractor lately!

Tomorrow morning I go for a follow-up on the oral surgery to make sure I'm healing well there (I am) and we will plan for the next step in that department.

Keeping calm and carrying on here...

Thanks JB. It's definitely been an interesting time over the last couple of years. Am definitely feeling better today after upping the med dosage. :D

Gonna go outside now and wander around the boat and contemplate stuff and such.

More pix of the donor taken this morning in the fog of dawn. When the dew dries I'll go out and move the boat to a better spot and start exploring it even more.

Wow, that is one ugly boat. Why would anyone buy that new? It is very kind of you to put it out of its misery as an organ donor.

The boat was sitting in the shade this morning and even 2 hours after sunup it's still covered with dew. So I just moved it into the sunshine so that it can dry out.

Here's the story...

Saw an ad on craigslist yesterday morning for this old bass boat with motor and trailer for $600. Seller claimed motor runs good. Texted her and got some info and started the process to go check it out. I really wanted that motor if it worked!

The boat was over 100 miles from home and I had to wait for my wife to get home from work so that we could all have a nice little road trip. M'lady arrived about noon and I showed her the pix. She had a very negative look on her face until I explained that it would be a donor boat, not another project and that the value could easily far exceed the asking price even if I paid the full amount. So she replied "Well, why don't you have your shoes on and are not dressed properly? Let's GO ALREADY!!"

Shortly thereafter we were rolling. Some 3 hours later (with a couple stops along the way) we arrived at the sellers house.

I checked out the motor as best I could. The seller actually did quite a bit of the work.

Four cylinders; three had 130PSI and the last one had 135PSI compression! :D

Spark testing... did it the old fashioned way with a screwdriver in the spark plug cap held against a grounded bolt. Good spark in all four cylinders and only one of them bit me!

Tried to get the tilt/trim to work but we had electrical deficiencies and only got the solenoid to click. Once I get a new battery in there I'll be in a better position to evaluate that issue.

Trailer had 2 flat tires but the seller had a battery powered compressor and got enough air in the tires so that I could get to a gas station on the next block.

So it was negotiation time. I asked the seller to give me his best price. He replied to make him an offer. So I jokingly said $100... and he chuckled and I then offered FIVE bucks... then TEN bucks! He laughed again and said he'd do the deal for $200!!! Agreed!

BOO-YAHH!!! SCORE!!

So we exchanged handshakes; I gave him the cash and it was time to roll. Immediately went to the gas station and put air in the slick bald trailer tires. They held up for the trip. Still holding air now.

Boat deck is shot but oddly the transom is solid. I bet the stringers are a mess though. All kinds of junk and trash was piled in the boat. We did a lot of clean out and stowing before rolling. Stopped at an auto parts store to pick up some ratchet straps and the nice folks there were kind enough to allow us to use their dumpster to get rid of the rest of the trash and junk. Trailer lights weren't working right. Both park lights and turn signals worked but no brake lights. Bought some new bulbs and replaced them but still no joy. Decided to just roll on anyway! Stopped about 1/2 way home to check on things and the right trailer light wasn't working at all anymore. So it was down to just the left side park/turn light. Keep on rolling... got home safely and without issue.

Oh! We stopped in our town to pick up some roadside BBQ and a young fella there was all over me about the boat. Told him the tale and he said I stole it... and that's pretty close to the truth! And that young fella wants to buy the trolling motor off the boat! Gonna pull it off the boat shortly so that I can test it for correct operation. Already starting to recoup some costs. :D

Enough typing... time to go outside and pull organs outta that donor!!

The prize!!

Major score for that price, sell off stuff and you will end up with a free motor and $$$ in your pocket. Awesome

Okay, I got the trolling motor off the boat. Cleaned up the wire ends and connected it to my truck battery. Nothing. Whanged on the steel bottom cover plate. Still nothing. I didn't feel like messing with it anymore so texted the kid from last night and he bought it from me for twenty bucks as is! So I got 10% of my cost back so far.

I can probably get $250 - $300 for the trailer as it sits. If I get that boat off there and do a cleanup I might get $350 - $450 but it's probably not worth my time and effort so I'll probably just sell it as is too. Eventually.

I don't have anywhere else to store the motor so the boat on the trailer is a motor stand for me. It'll give me a place to work on the engine while still leaving my Kingfisher usable until I get started on the transom replacement.

The transom replacement is part of Phase 2 of the project and I'm still on Phase 1a with still a dozen things left to do. And the motor replacement isn't until Phase 3, which was supposed to be sometime next year. Like in the spring. But I seem to have jumped ahead a couple of steps with this purchase! :D

Still waiting for the weather to break here. And for my buddy from up north to head down this way. He has all kinds of good woodworking tools and whatnot. Plus he has the skills to use them! :smug:

Got the rest of the carp out of the boat and salvaged the stuff I want to keep for my Kingfisher. A couple ventilation scoops, some nav light stuff and a few other goodies. The spare tire and holder, the rotatable jack and several cleats and such will save me some buckaroos. Am not sure I'll be able to salvage the switch and fuse panel and the front voltage gauge and trolling motor connection. Was really hoping that I could use the remote tilt trim switch that's up front too. Time will tell when I get the wiring and everything pulled if it's still usable.

Here's the treasure pile.

The steering cable works smoothly.

Shifted the motor in and out of gear too. Seems to be smooth and okay thus far. Good news, that!

I'll pull the pair of seat bases off and sell those on c-list along with the posts. That'll bring a few more bucks too. ;)

Prop looks good. Thought it might be stainless but I think it's actually polished aluminum. Dunno. Guess I could pull it off and see if it's fairly heavy but I don't wanna right now! :biggrin-new:

I'm such a dipstick sometimes. I'd mentioned in an earlier post that the transom in my donor boat seemed to be pretty solid considering everything else is shot. Previously I'd pushed down on the motor leg with my full weight and it didn't budge.

But I'd forgotten to remove the transom saver first!!

Went out there this morning and removed the transom saver... pushed down on the motor and discovered cracks, splits and separations all along the transom. It moved a lot when I was pushing on the motor and is seriously broken and matches the rest of the boat. So it's consistent. DUH me!! :playful:

I did all this in anticipation of getting rid of the boat later on. My neighbor told me last night that our local dump will take the thing but there's like a $100 fee. :grumpy:
