I have moved outside

I have moved my sleeping quarters outdoors to our patio-veranda.
It's 6mx6m, fully enclosed by exterior fly screen on 3 sides - very comfortable.
It is summer, so I am the most comfortable I have probably ever been.

I go to sleep with the moon lighting the place up; a cool breeze wafting thru; I hear the nocturnal wild life living out their lives, and I am woken by the rising sun. The wife brings me my coffee at 5.45am, and our 2 dogs (their beds are in an enclosed corner) still can't believe what they are seeing.

The down side - well last night all the crows in the district had a big party down the back, which degenerated into a drunken brawl; my little Scottie growls when she knows a possum is passing thru, plus she complains when she hears thunder.

I have always had this desire to sleep outside, as my French Grandfather did (on an open porch) for 60yrs (age 32 to 92, and then they bought him in for his health).
What put me off all these years was - I was an infantryman for 9 years, and I have slept in some pretty not-nice places, in fact, I have never been camping since!

Maybe I should be honest. I apparently have started to snore, so the wife would go up to the top room, which I didn't think right, so I made the move. Everybody is happy.
Can't wait for winter!!

Cheers
Phillip

WOW!!!!
I would go to the DR. to get my snoring fixed before i slept outside away from my wife!
But it must be nice to be able to sleep outside in the summer and be comfortable..here on the Texas gulf coast there is no sleeping without AC for me!

Sounds great, Phil. As a boy I slept on a screened porch in the Summer and in a screened cabin at Summer camp. When I was stationed in Hawaii I slept in a barrack that was screened (wide eaves). Camping out was nice, but my tent didn't do well in thunderstorms. :(

In those days the air was sweeter and the world quieter at night.

We use to sleep outside in the summer when I was growing up. I loved it. They do make little strips you can put on the ridge of your nose while you sleep to stop you from snoring, since the summer wont last forever. :)

Get a sleep study done. Usually with that kind of snoring you might need to be on a CPAP, or do you need to loose some weight ?

Re: I have moved outside

This got me thinking and remembering back to when I was a kid and spent a lot of summer nights sleeping in tents or on an open porch at camps in the woods. It was great, listening to the wind in the trees, waves hitting the shore, owls & loons and the night time wildlife.

I live in a much more urban area now and when my kids were little, between 5 and 10 I guess, I wanted to share the experience with them so we decided to have an adventure and sleep on our open back porch. What a difference! While they slept, I laid awake all night listening to traffic, loud train whistles, a manufacturing plant horn, neighbors coming and going, etc. etc. What a horrible night!! :D:D

I'm sure yours will be better, Phil!

Re: I have moved outside

Some of the older, 2 story farm houses had screened-in "sleeping porches" that folks used in the Spring, Summer and Fall. I believe these porches were seen as a respite from the heat, as well as some relief or aid for the tuberculosis, consumption and other pulmonary diseases that folks suffered from before antibiotics. I have a bunk bed on my back screen porch now with a ceiling fan, and on a good day it's about as near heaven as I know of!:)

I've slept out on my back porch on several occassions. It wasn't because of my snoring or the dog. :D

As a kid, friends would take ropes and blankets, make a hammocks and sleep in it out in the woods. Was lots of fun until you would wake up hearing thunder, then it was head for the tent.

Re: I have moved outside

My friend slept on a screened back porch with 5 brothers in 3 sets of bunk beds. They put up black plastic to block the winds on those cold NE Oklahoma nights. All they had to eat was what from their gardens and what they shot/trapped--deer, rabbit, fish. To this day, he sleeps with the windows open, and he has an eating disorder.

My early years were without air conditioning, and we slept with an exhaust fan. I stayed sick until I got old enough to cut down that damned Mimosa tree that I was so allergic to. Scarcely had a sniffle since.

Most American kids are just too allergic to sleep outside.

More power to you if you can commune with nature.

Thats only because they don't do it enough, and houses are HEPA filtered and surgical clean... Gotta be exposed to to the world at a young age to develop some defenses against it!

Anyway, all this camping and outdoor talk makes me want to pull the tent out. Think we're expecting some good snowfall this weekend, with any luck it'll be enough to build a couple snow walls to block the wind, and maybe I'll get some winter camping in!

Re: I have moved outside

When I was younger we used to go to the interior of BC. When we got there the slide in camper would be taken off the truck since we would be there for a couple of weeks. I used to sleep under the overhang of the camper on a cot. My sisters would sleep in the tent. It was great to be woken by the sound of the campground coming to life. And even better being able to go to sleep with the sound of a camp fire not far away. Some of the best sleeping arrangements I have ever had.

Re: I have moved outside

Well, I am still out there.
Had a very wet 2 weeks so had to move the bed in to the centre (remember I have fly screen on 3 sides) and things were getting 'slightly moist'.
I jumped back into the main bed one night and it was little better (in the sub-tropics, when the humidity is way up everything feels damp and goes moldy quickly) so straight back outside for me.
Also had the tree lopper in and removed a row of trees behind the pool, so now I can see clear down the valley, plus the sun when it rises -pretty cool actually.
I finally found this picture, and although it is your blokes in a different thearte to the one I was in, it pretty much sums up the life of a grunt, and may explain why I have avoided camping for the past 42 years. (probably just the same 500 yrs back too).

Anyway, wife still thinks me being outside is a good idea.
