I have a 8hp mariner it is older but i dont know year. On tag it says 8m 601 S #012272 Any help would be a great help would like to rebuild carbs and impeller so kids could use to fish thanks.

Are you sure it's not a 6G1?

perhaps you're missing a digit on that serial number? Most of these are 7 digits where yours is 6.

The 601s were made between 1960 and 1964.

If it is 6G1, it comes up as:

8C M 6G1-007990 - 6G1-015263 1984
