I bet my old whaler was not much better...great job!! You have something you can be very proud of. Most folks would love to have something that looks that good...and even better you can take pride in doing the work yourself. This is the best way to learn....keep it up

whalers are very good boats. if a whaler has a hole in it, your okay. if an aluminum boat gets a hole in it...... thats a different story.

I have my fingers crossed for you James. Great looking old motor. I believe it's a 56'-58' model, which would make it about 4 times older than you are!!! That should tell you how well made these old OMC motors are. I hope you get it. Keep us posted.

Re: I have a chance to buy a Johnson 18 hp.

right now i am 11 years old and i just bought my first boat. so i don't really have any mechanical skills yet. but my local marina fixes motors like this for about $150 - $300.

James, you're not alone as far as being a youngin' on the forum. Wait till you meet coolguy147 He was not much older than you, when I joined up and so far, he's restored a couple old classics. Personally, I think you're starting out right, with an old 18, because they are about the best motor built, as far as I'm concerned and the most reliable. This is probably the last motor that will leave a youngin stranded out on the lake. If you hang out with us, we will walk you through the tips of keeping it up and making it run right.

Yeah, that would be a 58. Almost a shame really. A 59 would be all over "warm white" with gold accents. Ugly in comparison imo but would go with your boat better. Hard to make out with the small avatar picture but I see a lot of blue or green in it. Rather a brutal clash with "Holiday Bronze". An Evinrude of the same era would be a better choice if you're not in a rush.

58 is a much better motor than the 59. :D:D

Make sure you get a functioning 2-line pressure tank w/the sale, as that motor requires it. If it doesn't come with a tank, you may have to spend another $100, if you can find a functioning one. good luck!

......with a lil help from others, the money you will spend at a shop, can be better spent on a few basic tools that will get you hooked on these oldies!!! dyi! follow intructions in the manuals......and by the time yer 14, you just might have yer own lil buisiness , fixin motors. much more fun than mowin lawns, or delivering newspapers! (just think of working on it yourself in this sense......i can barely work this pc.....you're probably a pc wizzard!.......old ob's are much easier to work on, and make work right!! lol)
