Re: I hate monofilament!

There is no one line for all fishing techniques, but if you have mostly ugly sticks, braid or other no streach line will work in most situations. If you puchase other rods, keep your options open. Be careful with not reeling your lure to close to the tip. It's easy to pop the insert out of the tip guide with braid. If you start shreading line, look at the tip and other guides to make sure the inserts didn't pop out. If you are using spinning gear be careful of putting too much stress or shock load on them. Easy to bend shafts, and the small diameter of 15-20lb braid can find its way into some small cracks, even between some line rollers.

Scipper - Try P-Line. Not sure how it casts but great for trolling Big-O.

If you like finesse fishing with medium action rod than braid is the best way to go. I prefer mono for anything with trebble hooks. Worm, jig, anything with a single hook is fish with med/hvy rod and mono works fine for that. I do use P-Line Evolution on the rod that I use to throw big football jig and 10" worm. My finesse spinning rods have 6lbs P-Line CXX.

Do you think 6 lb p-line is a better bet than fireline/braided with a 5-10' flouorocarbon leader?

How does p-line cast? I rely on long casts when shore fishing.

To me Suffix braid handles the best in the braid category. The Suffix mono seemed to fray too easily.

I don't know about better but it works good for what I use it for. I don't need to make really long cast with my finesse rigs but it does cast well. I throw either weightless worm or no more then 1/4oz drop shot and shakey head into submerged tree tops, submerged brushes and boat docks. It very strong but if it gets hang up, I can break it off without spooking the fish.

Popping tips is a quality issue. Nothing to do with the type of line you use.

I run a custom rod and repair shop on the side. Most if not all the ?popped? tips I replace are on rods where they cut corners on the hardware to keep the cost down. I can count the number of ?popped? tips on rods using quality components in a year on one hand.

I see ?radial cracking? on good hardware, mostly on surf rods where they?re pushing large leader connections thru the guides, but I don't think I've ever seen a "popped" guide on a high quality tip.

What Sufix mono are you using?
Sufix Superior (mono) and Sufix Tritaniun (co-poly)are renowned for their abrasion resistance qualities. Tritanium has a cult following amongst surf anglers.

Not sure what guides they are using on Ugly Sticks today, but I wouldn't call the ones I've had in the past "high quality". And with braid, it will tend to happen more, espeicailly when new to it, or a new reel with a higher retrieve rate. Mono has enough streach that I never popped a tip on them. When I was using braid with them it became rather regular (until figuring out what was happening). Shakespeare sent me a number of new tips free. The new ones were not any better. Just something for the op to watch out for.

I have popped a few Sic concept guides/tips, but was usually associated with other damage or impact to side of boat or engine cowl on the cast. Cold and icing could have been contributers, as well.

Not sure which since it was on a friends setup. Wasn't long before it was too frayed to be used. Maybe it was just a bad spool? My all time favorite is Berkley Sensation.

Ugly stick uses bottom of the barrel guides. I see more cracked / broken guide frames on those rods than anything else.

How about mono is good, braid is good.Use mono for treble hook baits and braid for single hooks.Just a simple rule(of course there are plenty of exceptions)maybe flouro too. if you have 3 combos.but flouro likes to unspool itself from spinning gear.

Beat me to it. P-Line casts great, and I think you'll find that the co-polymer will have all the desirable traits of mono without the stretch. Really good stuff, and it won't cost you a fortune to try.

Re: I hate monofilament!

I switched over to spiderwire about 14 years ago or so, it had just come out. I never went back to mono. Whomever has bird nests with spiderwire is crazy. I have never had a bird nest I couldn't get out, or that went more than about 2 wraps. After 12 years I got my father to switch over, he is the king of bird nests. Even he says it's amazing stuff, even HE hasn't had a bird nest he couldn't get out.

We used to lose baits at a rate so consistent our tackle box was always nice and shiny with new baits. Since I switched over, I have only lost baits that I had to cut off. I literally don't lose baits anymore. They are actually starting to rust. The only reason I buy baits now is because I get tired of looking at the old ones. I have rat-l-traps in my box now that are almost 20 years old.

It's way more sensitive than mono with no stretch. Casting distances, I don't know. I never even thought about it. About the same I guess. I love the fact that I can run 30lb spiderwire and it be the same diameter as like 8lb mono.

I can't speak for anything other than trilene and spiderwire, but I'll never go back.
