I got the Yamaha, but...

Well, I think I screwed up here. I went to the dealer I wanted to buy the Yamaha 8 from, and he only had the short shaft. Looking at it, it looked too short. Even measuring it seemed like it would be too short. He even thought I should probably get the long and recommended a couple other dealers. So I found another dealer that had the long and went and bought it. They took it out of the box, started it up, and I took it home. Well when I got home and put it on the boat, I am thinking it is too long. First of all its more like 23 inches instead of the 20 he told me. And when the bracket is in the up position, it is still going to be in the water. I would have to have it totally tilted up to be out of the water, and I don't like how it is going to be bouncing around especially if the water is rough. And 80 pounds is a lot heavier once I lifted it than it sounds on paper! I kind of wish I would have stuck with a smaller lighter 2 stroke. Oh well, I guess I'm stuck with it now. About the only thing I can do is see if he will exchange it for the short shaft. I haven't used it or anything yet. And maybe I will get a heavier duty motor bracket, one rated at over a hundered pounds instead of the borderline 80 one I have, so I don't have to worry the whole time when its bouncing around out there. Hopefully paying this extra couple hundred dollars to buy it locally is going to pay off.

I see this a lot. People who have to handle outboards should go to Home Depot and lug a 94# bag of cement first to relize how much additional weight they can handle. While most can handle that weight close to the body, move it out a foot and you've got your problem. I recommend you sell the motor asap, there is a demand, and get what you can handle. Life is too short to be too tight with the dollar, beats a life of back problems.

Re: I got the Yamaha, but...

Are you serious about selling it?? I paid 1900 for it after tax, how much would it be worth? Ahhhh now I'm really confused. I mean if its on the boat, its fine, I can lift it up and down with the bracket. But it was almost impossible to tilt it up from inside the boat so I would need the short shaft so I wouldnt need to. So you thinking they wouldnt swap it? I wonder if they would take the motor back, even if they charged a small fee. Any motor is going to be at least 60 pounds isnt it? Doesnt seem like 20 pounds is that much of a difference. I should be all happy to have a new motor and now I just don't know what to do!

Dan

Get into the dealer right away. I don't know if they'll be excited about it, but I would sure try before I put a mark on the motor. You may come out a little on the bad end financially, but at least you'll have what you need for a pleasurable day on the water.

Re: I got the Yamaha, but...

Yeah the more I am thinking about it, the more I think I don't want it. I feel like such an idiot. Ok so if they do take it back, what do you think the most is I should lose out of this, where I might be better off selling it? Now that I think of it, maybe they will take it back. I mean, they do have some motors out of the box on display, and some in the box. Since they start it up in the back room for the customer anyways, I don't see where they would have to sell it as used or anything. Man I can't believe this, I have been researching this motors for almost 2 months and I end up like this. Well I'm gonna go sleep on it and think of what I should do, but I really don't think I want it. I guess I'll just be honest and tell the guy I was stupid and can't handle it. Thanks.

Re: I got the Yamaha, but...

Dan,

Most anything can be returned. You're talking to a professional "returner" here. I went through that with my inflateable, beat the guy down at the boat show, then went back for a bigger one, then another size up.... Ended up losing my "savings", but ended up with what I wanted. Then I ordered a 4 stroke, then cancelled and ordered a different one, then cancelled that one and ended up with the Johnson 8 horse 2 stroke-58 lbs!!!

Course if I read your other posts correctly the Nissan/Tohatsu 9.8 would also be within you're weight lifting range.

I also bought a 74 lb thrust 52 inch shaft MinnKota last year, but it wasn't long enough so I returned it (cut wires and all) for the 62 inch shaft, 101 lb thrust. Hope this gives you the confidence to go back to the dealer and give it a shot. Good luck!

PS Figure out the long/short shaft thing first though.

PSS I sure thought the extra 20 lbs would make a difference on my back putting it on and taking it off the raft!

Bring it back as soon as you can! Doesn't the USA have laws to protect consumers? Here in Canada you can return goods within 10 days of purchase.

Get what you really want from your dealer. If your boat is trailerable, why not bring it there too and try out whatever you intend to get.

Re: I got the Yamaha, but...

Well I called the dealer, he said they already registered it in my name this morning and is going to see if they can deal with getting my name off of it. That doesn't seem like it should be a big deal, but I have been waiting a couple hours for him to call me back, and just called him again and he said he is still waiting. I am going to call Yamaha now to see if its a problem to change that. They are probably just stalling to figure out how much to charge me.

That "registering" thing don't mean nothing. As long as you're buying another engine off him, I don't see the gripe. Keep us posted, and good luck!

Re: I got the Yamaha, but...

Well I won't be buying another engine off of them because they don't have any two strokes. So I am thinking its worth it to me even if they charged me like $200 to take it back. The way I see it that way, they'd be making $200 off of me for basically doing nothing! This guy didn't have to spend five minutes with me to try to sell it, all the other dealers did that. If not, how much do you think I could sell it for? It helps because just about every place I called in the Seattle area is out of the long shaft 8.

Re: I got the Yamaha, but...

Oh well, the salesman kept giving me the runaround all day, and finally said no. I talked to the manager for awhile, said how he is going to have to sell at as used and most he would give me is 1500. Sounds like bull to me. No way they are going to sell that as used. So I think I'll list on ebay and start it at 1550. Does that sound good? I was stupid, and I learned a lesson.

You might talk to other dealers who have what you want and see about a deal on a trade-in...just a thought :)

Re: I got the Yamaha, but...

Good idea. To tell you the truth, I dont even want anything right now! Maybe I'll just buy a couple good batteries for my elec motor and have someone tow me back if I break down! Oh well, I got it listed, we'll see what happens. Now, do you guys know anything about warranty transfer if I sell it? It says something about having a Yamaha service shop do an inspection and then do the transfer, but since I haven't filled out the card or anything, can I just give the buyers that and the receipt? I'd really rather not deal with these people again.

Dan,

Sorry to hear you didn't make out.

Have you given any thought to relocating the bracket? Like maybe shimming it out away from the transom?

Good luck

See if you can talk him into $1600 and bite the bullet on the $300.00 and get what you want...

Re: I got the Yamaha, but...

I told him I would take 1550 and he wouldn't go for it. That's ridiculous. I know darn well he wouldnt sell it as used. Then he tries to tell me he'd be losing $300 on this transaction cause he had to pay the people $125 to prepare it (two teenagers took about a half hour to take it out of the box and start it, if they get paid $100 an hour thats the business I better get in!), secretaries, and a bunch of other stuff. And I had to call him back 5 times throughout the day because he never called back when he said he would, and then when I asked him why it took him all day to say he wouldnt take it back, he said he was too busy, he had customers. I dont care what the issue is, you don't tell a customer you are too busy for them. Well I think I could sell it for $1550 at least. This one place that takes trade ins has a 5 HP 2 stroke Merc for $1100. Those weigh 45 pounds, half of what I have now! If I don't sell it, maybe I will see what they will give me on a trade in. Thats a decent motor isnt it? I am sure that motor would would be fine for the little usage I would get out of it. Even the 59 pound 2 stroke Tohatsu might be bulkier than it sounds, I dont know. I know 45 pounds would be no problem. Thanks a lot for letting me vent and all your advice!

Marine dealers and services in seasonal locations frequently have a real attitude.... There aren't enough of them such that competition forces them to do business right, and then to boot they act like we should feel sorry for them because it's so hard to make money in a seasonal business. I would love to move about 80% of these businesses here in the Northeast to Florida and watch them fold in about 6 seconds - the customer who is not treated right can walk about 100 yds to find a better dealer.

Dan

Legally, I suspect he would indeed have to sell it as used. Yamaha would have to cooperate to erase the ownership history. Not saying Yamaha couldn't. Just don't know if they would.

You're going to be even madder when you try to trade it to a non Yamaha dealer for a motor of similar value. They'll have no interest in paying anywhere close to new price. They would definitely have to sell it used if not a Yammi dealer.

Dan...if that Yammi dealer has no interest in your future business there's no reason for him to pay you much...Yamaha will sell him the same motor for much less than you are asking...and he won't have to finagle the paperwork in order to sell it as new...just a thought :)

Re: I got the Yamaha, but...

Yeah I hear ya. I know, its my fault here. But on the other hand, they could be making a quick and easy $350 for doing absolutely nothing but being jerks. And I definitely would have been a future customer because they had a pretty nice fishing store there too. Could have at least offered me the short shaft so I could use the thing. When I called Yamaha to ask about the warranty, they couldnt believe that he let me leave without asking any questions to make sure I was getting the right length at least. Anyways, they wanted the name of the dealer, I dont know why. But whatever, I started a new post saying what Im gonna do next.
