Re: I finally did it....

I think it must have been in the air Saturday... I got up early Saturday morning and hauled the Jon Boat to the lake to get some early morning fishing in. There was only one other person at the ramp at the same time as me. An older gentleman.

In my hurry to get out of his way, I backed the truck in, pushed the boat off of the trailer and lashed it to the dock. Went back to pull the truck up and park it.. When I came back I said to myself, "Boy that thing sure looks like it's sitting low in the water." Saw the drain plug sitting on the seat as I got closer. Managed to get it put in and started bailing water out of the boat...

The older man came up after he had parked his truck, looked down into my boat, and said, "Well, at least I'm not the only one who has done that."

Guess it happens to us all.

Re: I finally did it....

Reminds me of an unfortunate episode from last year that could have been a lot worse. I had some engine work done at the high-n-dry where my boat is stored. That weekend I have them put the boat in and go out for the day with my kids. Eight hours later I come back after the place is closed and tie up to have it taken out in the morning. The bilge pump starts running and I discover the mechanic had never put the plug back in and it had stayed afloat because it had sucked something into the hole that plugged it up. Now it's 9pm and I, of course, didn't have a spare. I ended up taking one out of another stored boat before the thing sank and coming back at 6am to replace it before the place opened - at least I had a wrench to "borrow" the other plug.

Re: I finally did it....

Many years ago while working the state marina at Erie, PA we were in the parking lot writing a citation on an offender when a gentleman came over to us somewhat in a panic and said he locked his keys in his car. We told him we would be with him and soon as we were finished with what we were doing. He was prancing on one leg and the other like he had to go to the bathroom or something. A few minutes later he asked how long we expected to be since he locked his keys in his car and had just launched his boat without putting the plugs in. We were just about finished so we soon hurried over to his car, broke out the slim jim and unlocked the door on an older Ford station wagon. He looked inside and realized the keys were not in the car. He then pulled his keycase out of his pocket and there was no key on it. Digging a little farther in his pocket he found the key which had fallen off the clip on the case. He had launched a fairly large cruiser, which had a double bottom, and the plugs were out of both. By this time the transom was about a foot lower than it should have been. After retrieving the boat and while it was draining I struck up a conversation with him and noticing he had out of state plates I asked him where he was from and what he did for a living. He told me what state and paused for several seconds and then told me he was a city planner. I told him that did not surprise me and we both had a good laugh.

All valves, check-balls, etc. eventually fail, whether because of corrosion, deformation, some debris sticking it open, what have you.

This one-way plug may be OK for a trailer boat, but no way would I use something like that on a moored boat.
