Probably the coolest thing I've seen.....ever. Looks like some sort of crazy vintage, Russian boat/plane/space ship thingy. All I know is that it is shiny and I must have it.

Pony up !! It will cost you $$:

"A 1978 A-3 registered N007, possibly the only one imported to the U.S., was sold at a Barrett-Jackson auction in 2007 for $187,000. The craft had a non-standard 9-cylinder engine, and two counter-rotating propellers."

Yeah, it looks like two props in the pic, but they seem to be pitched the same direction. I know the Russians like to use counter rotating props on aircraft, and it would seem to me to be much more important on a single engine aircraft than even a boat. Whassup with 'dat? That whole issue has my puzzler scrunched up.

I can hear the auctioneer now. "Come on guys, the trailer alone is worth that!"

The prop issue has me stumped too. Can they be positioned like that to create a nozzle as well as a fan?

Yeah, but I was actually thinking of the typical Craigs List ads we joke abut in the mega thread ;)

I saw this at the Atlanta boat show last month. The cockpit looked right out of a plane. It was designed and built by Tupolev, a Russian aircraft co. It's only display now and one of the props is on backwards.

That was designed for the Ruskies first moon landing which they gave up on when the figured they had no chance of beating the US to it.

Thanks for the video. The owner explains the reason for the prop design. The claim is quad blades increase efficiency by 35% and dampen the fan noise. I believe there is some validity to that claim. Steam and gas turbines utilize this benefit with reactionary and impulse blade design in a similar fashion.

... just don't know enough about that sort of thing. I get the concept, and I can understand how the "fatter" airscrew will have a different dynamic than the airplane props I'm used to. I can't quite see why a setup more like a push-pull (think Cessna Skymaster) wouldn't actually work better - though obviously more complicated.

The Russians certainly come up with some fascinating transportation solutions.
