Re: I broke my fishing rod..

i been looking at the carrot stix because i like to be the only one i know with something.. an all my fishing buddies dont have em so, i might go look at those an get one..

Yeah, I have warned friends, that they can't bring those god awful rods on my boat! Nothing like waving a flag to tell everyone in visual range, you got one! ;)

Seriously, they were the "hot" item last year and maybe the year before, but as distribution increased, and most other brands offering split-grip, haven't seen much buzz on them this year. I haven't fished with them, but have handled a few. What I remember was a large diameter blank (probably a good thing w/split grip) and what appeared to be a cheezy reel seat. Make sure you go handle one or any rod you are considering before laying out that kind of money.

FWIW: I use to be a big ugly stick and ugly stick lite fan. Still have a number of the rods. Only issue, as mentioned above, was the rings popping out of tips and some eyelets. Call/talk to Shakespeare and they will send you new ones. If I pick-up an ugly stick today, it feels like a log, though. So, if your happy, don't bother upgrading, it will be hard to go back.

Store bought:eek:
My quiver is slowly but surely being replaced with rods I have built up myself:D
You can choose what components are used, plus the satisfaction that comes from catching a fish on a rod you made is priceless. google rod building and you'll have all the information and know how you need to get started. Be carefull though as it is addicting

I have an old Shimano rod that has seen the light at the end of the tunnel, and am currently looking at the new Shimano Crucial casting rod.

Not saying to go with an expensive rod, but technology has changed.... a lot! Some of the best reviews revolve around Shimano products from what I've read lately...

You won't be dissappointed.

The reel seats on mine are chromed steel. Not exactly what I would call "cheesy".

What I said was "and what appeared to be a cheezy reel seat.". If you are referring to the collar, I believe it it chrome plated plastic, which is found on many rods.

You'd think at the price they could afford to put the whole handle on ;) LOL

I have held a few split grips but they just haven't struck my appeal nerve yet.

Re: I broke my fishing rod..

i broke my medium action ugly stik i had for 4 years of fishing on a 30 inch muskie last week. the joint cracked in 3 places and half the rod went in the water. still managed to land the fish. released it back into the water and cursed my way home after another 2 hours of fishing and fighting the upper half of the rod that had to be reset every third cast or so. ugly stiks are nice that one was my second oldest rod for spinner reels. got a new hot pink one showing up in the mail saturday. but its not a ugly stick. they dont make pink ones. im going to glue the sections together this time. maybe get a few extra years out of it before i break it somehow.

Frap it, then glue it, just like you would for an eye.

If you go with the Ugly Stik may I suggest the Ugly Stik Lite. It cost about $10 more but is a better more sensitive rod.

If your looking in the $100 -$150 range look into going custom. You'll end up with EXACTLY what you want without the compromises you have to make when purchasing a production rod.

My thoughts exactly.
Although I do want a St.Croix as well. Been eyeing them up at the local fishing store.

Re: I broke my fishing rod..

35 yrs. ago, I broke one of my fishing poles. Early one Sat. morning a bunch of us met at a Bar waiting for everyone to gather, while waiting we knocked down a few "Chartreuce's"(sp) just to get in the mood....:D well when we finally got down to the beach I was setting up my 15ft. Diawa Surf rod, gold series Diawa 9g reel (the Biggest at the time). As I was pulling the line through the last eye, Pole in holder, stuck deep in the sand, I did not realize the bail had flipped and I was pulling the tip down to hard and SNAP!......needless to say, my day ended before it started, spent the morning sleeping it off in the Van......Lesson learned.....keep an eye on the bail!

Re: I broke my fishing rod..

the only rods i have broken are the two piece rods when the end section starts sliding out of the socket they tend to split the joint. i have teaken to gluing two piece rods into one piece rods. havent broken one in quite a while now. i have rods ranging from 7$ cheap chinese rods to pricey 100$+ rods. i honestly cant really tell the diff. im prolly not "sophisticated" enough to tell the diff. they all catch fish. i am coming to the conclusion that reel choice and fishing line taht fits the reel with proper knot tying and correct drag setting is far more important than the rod itself.
