Re: I am an idiot.

If I'm not mistaken the V-10's have the same issue as the 5.4's do? Blowing spark plugs out of the head. Insufficient thread depth in the aluminum head.

I have a 2002 5.4 and had done half the engine already. Not fun.

The blowing the plugs out of the head was an issue with the factory using plugs that were not fully threaded and over torqued not that there was a problem with the head itself. The fix was to replace the plugs.

I remember when you did that.

Yep. Agallant, sorry for your misfortune. I really like those beastly Excursions. I love my Expedition too as most everyone on here knows though it's given me a headache or two.

I know you are posting about buying a new truck. Just remember, just a few truck payments = new engine.

New is a bad choice IMO, it kinda defeats the entire goal of saving coin. Accept the fact that the drive train on the used vehicle is gonna need love. Plan to fix it, and do so soon so you can boat, you will still be well ahead of buying a new truck. Who wants a Excursion with a blown motor? you will get soaked even more selling that the way it is now. Expecting a high mileage vehicle to tow that much was probably a mistake, but heck once you replace both the engine and trans. you should be good to go. It's not the end of the world, and you will be rolling in no time, especially with a nice neighbor, who should do you well. That alone is worth doing this, trying to find a reputable shop to do this work would be really rolling the dice IMO. Don't forget what insurance cost's on a new truck when you run the #'s.

Re: I am an idiot.

Shop for rebuilds witih warranty. Compare warranties, and decide which warranty is best.

Installed an additional transmission cooler. Towing with an automatic creates lots of heat. The stock trans coolers in the radiator simply is not enough.

BIL owns a tranny shop. H'e has taught me a lot about what goes wrong. Never tow in OD, that creates even more heat.

Another vote for fix and keep.
