I picked up a 2000 Reinell 180 it has a volvo penta sx a gew weeks back. I love the boat it is in good shape all around. But there are a few things i need some help with. First the trim switch sticks up or down so if i dont keep an eye on it it pulls all the way up or down. The other thing is when i start up what should i do? The guy i got it from said prime it one time by going all the way forward the back. But when i do that it kicks over but then dies. So i have to take it out of gear and give it some gas. I have to keep it like that for a little bit tell its worm then it will idle for me. Another thing the worrys me is today i seen my oil gage Jump all over the place. When it is not bouncing or dead it seems to be right at 40. Another thing is it seems to drive fine to me but when i give it full gas there is a rattling Sound coming from the motor Rpm at about 5000 or so. Any help would be amazing Had to send this from my phone so sorry if there are spelling errors.

New boat. 1st thing you do is buy service manual, then tune up,points plugs rotor an cap. Change oil and filter and outdrive oil and grease all fittings
oil gauge jumping around is probably a bad ground wire check connections
rattling sound could be gimbal bearing an not the motor

Welcome,always include the model# Serial#
Fill out the profile,location?
Spray some WD in the switch?
What motor?
The oil sender could be bad? Or the guage is bad.
Try grounding out the sender and see if the guage jumps or pegs.
Still jumps, then it's the guage. No jump, probably the sender.
I always thought(not positive) the max rpm's were around 4500?
Maybe over reving and the lifters are floating?
Some motors need to worm up:)? The choke might need adjusting?

Without a full model number (all the letters) or a serial number of your engine, your not going to get other than very general answers.

Well i think i have it 3. ogs mwtr the drive unit is sx-m 1.97 and the trans assembly
Is tsk sx-m i stopped at a boat shop on the way home From work he said the penta is known to have grounding problems he also said check the wire connections as well for corrosion or just being loose. after that when I got home I wanted to look to see if i could find anything loose in the motor that would make the noise I was hearing.when I grabbed the alternator and tried moving it it had a lot of play to it. So I tried to tighten the bold but is tightened all the way. But when you move it back and forth it has a definite rattling noise. So I'm guessing when I'm giving it full throttle and the engine is shaking that it would be rattling pretty hard. is there any way to make it so it does not move because there is a definite gap or is it Fine to have that much play? it is a factory alternator from Volvo so I don't know why it would not fit correctly. Has anybody had this problem or any suggestions anything will help at this point. Thanks for your time!

No, it's a 3.0GSMWTR

You also have a Volvo Penta, not an OMC, so will move this to the Volvo forums as well.

No, Volvo is not known for grounding issues, owners, boat manufacturers, and shops with untrained techs are the cause of grounding problems.
All wiring connedtions (including battery) must be tight with a wrench, not wing nuts and weak fingers. That is where the grounding issues come from.

when I grabbed the alternator and tried moving it it had a lot of play to it.

The holes in the alternator are probably all worn out from being loose for a long time. Post a picture showing where all the movement is. Then it can be determined how to fix it.

Re: i am a new boat owner and need some help

the first one is where it has play to it. i think that is the only spot it can move the rest seems tight. in the other one the yellow hose looks burnt it comes from the top of the fuel filter. is that fine as long as it is not leaking? i did see that it is a hard in the burnt spots so it is a little pinched there. is that something that can wait or should i get a new one on before i go out this weekend?

Can you post some pictures big enough to actually see?

Never mind, I see the problem. You have the wrong through bolt in the first picture. Get the right one and it will tighten right up.

DSCN372811.jpg i called to find the bolt but i keep getting told to call ace hardware to get it. but from the looks of it thats what the person did with the one i have and that is why it has a gap. also will i mess anything up if i run it the way it is over the weekend? is there a good place to call to order one that will work im guessing a volvo dealer of some sort. with the burnt line i put a pic of where it is burnt and where the hose comes from to help. i am also going to find and check all my grounds tomorrow after work. to see if that is what is making the gauges jump around. if i find them all to be in good shape what would be my next step. thanks again for all your help!!!!!

Get a 7/16 diameter bolt, you have a 3/8 in there now. Get one that has no threads through the alternator, but still sticks through the back far enough to put a nut and washer on it. An auto parts store might be better than Ace.

The hose is a bypass hose for the fuel pump in case the fuel leaking through the pump diaphragm. Any fuel would then go from the pump to the carb instead of the bilge. If the hose doesn't have a hole in it at the burn mark, it's fine.

Re: i am a new boat owner and need some help

I was told by a buddy that Volvo likes to use 10 mm for that bolt. But he said that was for his car that he had. So not sure but I think that is what I will try for now. It that don't work looks like I have to wait a week to get one on special order. This is all I could find on it but no sizes to be found. Alternator 3.0GSMWTR, 3.0GSMWTS, 3.0GSPWTR, 3.0GSPWTS - 7797465 - Volvo Penta Is there any way to jimmy rig it for now if a 10 mm won't fit.

Well none of the sizes fix it it almost seems that there is space no matter the size of the bolt the alternator itself does not fit snug in the mounting bracket on the motor I can see a very small but nonetheless a gap there I'm thinking maybe find a thin enough washer to throw in there to fill the gap the alternator part number is 3856600. Vendor number ac165618 is that the correct alternator for my motor or am I just missing something altogether
