Mid 80's 90hp. I have an intermittant miss. Done all the resistance checks in the manual and find no problem on either switchbox or stator. I'm betting on the stator because I had the same problem about 8 years ago and a mechanic was kind enough to let me try a good switchbox without charging me for it and it ended up being the stator. If it's a switchbox problem it will be on both because cyl. 3 falls out regularly followed by 2 and one time #4 so if it's switchbox related it will be both. Question is...How do I positively identify the problem with limited diagnostic tools? I was using a single automotive fire checker and guessing at the gap. #3 would fail always if I got the gap about 3/4" and would come and go around 3/8-1/2". There wasn't a mechanic on duty Sat. morning where I went but the parts guy was kind enough to let me hook up a multi lead checker. 2 & 3 never fired at the shop but when I got home I could get #2 to fire by closing the gap a little so that tells me it's not totally dead...would this make you think the stator was just firing on the low side?
