hydrofoils.......

My 13.3 whaler with a 40hp evinrude is way bow high until the speed gets up enough to get it up on the step. With one person at the controls, one in the middle seat, and the gas tank and battery in the back, it is not terrible, but still bad. With just one person the bow will rise so high you can't see whats in front of you. I'm considering a hyrofoil as I plan to do some towing with it this summer as well, and would like to see where I am going at lower speeds. Is it something worth investing in? I've heard pros and cons about loss of speed, breaking cavitation plates, etc and wondering what others think. Any brand that is better than another?

Thanks
Adam

What kind of "trim" device do you have?

Re: hydrofoils.......

I had a very similar setup a couple years ago. 14ft whaler style hull with a 40hp Mariner. Motor had power trim but could not overcome very bad porpoising.

I installed a set of trim tabs (smart tabs knock-offs) and it was like a new boat. Completely eliminated the porpoising, improved high speed turn stability, eliminated bow rise and allowed me to stay on plane at lower speeds which was great for pulling skiers in the small boat. After installing the tabs the hole shot was awesome. Boat just jumped up ontop of the water and launched with ZERO bow rise, again great for skiers

Don't waste your money on a tail. Spend a little more and you will be glad you did.

Yes. Do you have power trim? When you put an engine that heavy on the 13 you really need PT&T

A good hydrofoil will help you plane at lower speed. I used a SE Sport 300 on mine, but it has to be fine tuned, particularly on an engine without PT&T.

This boat is still as bone stock as it came from the factory in 1960. The only adjustment it has on it is the engine tilt on the transom. Sounds like the some sort of trim may be a worthwhile investment. How are the self adjusting ones?

I KNOW THIS FOR SURE!! you are going to upgrade to a bigger boat, so for now, there should be ajustments at the motor/transum. ajust trim :rolleyes:there and you will learn a lot about how boats operate.
