New here and to boats, this being my first. Seen ad for Hydro Shield claims increase mileage and faster on plane. Also claims to process prop against under water objects. Is any of this true? Would like the protection if real.

Best of luck whatever you decide. Maybe I’m getting old ..but I’ve always been of the mind that nearly a century of R&D from the big brands that make outboards, might have suggested there isn’t a need for such things…or they would have changed the design by now. The only other reason I can think of for things like these and doelfin and the likes…is to mitigate a poorly suited engine to boat set up. Anyway. All the best.

That’s one of the reasons for asking. Since my boat knowledge can fit in a glass with room leftover. I am trying to learn good things and stay away from gimmicks. Thank you for the reply.

They do work on small underpowered boats and motors. As a machinist I have made a few over the years for small out boards that actually worked quite well. Today, many folks have a poorly balanced boat and motor combo, improperly setup and expect an add-on fin to cure there problems. Many folks see an improvement, even though they could have made a bigger improvement by just creating a better setup ! Often these are installed on high powered motors only to have the increased water pressure cause actual damage to the motor itself. O me most gizmos on the market, there is a time and a place for them, but mostly an excuse for an improper setup.

Some misinformation here. Most of the posters are referring to a hydrofoil, which can and is an awesome product. It has a bad rap due to mostly installation problems.

Nevertheless, the OP asked about a Hydro Shield, which is a different animal altogether. Unless someone has actual real world experience with THIS product, the OP should research it further.

Yep, I am one that jumped to the tail fin, did not read deep enough to realize he was talking about a different animal.

Looked-up Hydro Shield - looks like a familiar animal, mounted differently

I was going to comment about mounting, but I decided to keep it to myself.

Let it out. We want to know.
OK.

I have been a believer in the Doelfin ever since Mr. Doelscher invented it. It mounts on the AV plate.

The Hydro Shield mounts on the skeg.

I think I will try a different mounting point.
