I have a 98 Mercruiser 5.7 that ran perfectly well last year. I had the engine professionally winterized last fall. This summer I had the boat hauled to the boat yard to be commissioned and launched. The yard called to tell me the engine wouldn't turn over, and was hydro locked!! I am waiting to hear back from them, I gave them the go ahead to remove the heads and inspect the cylinders. What do you think the chances are of it being survivable?:facepalm:

um, im confused. How did they winterize it if it was hydro locked?

What were they doing to commission and launch that caused this?

Hope they are warantying the repairs that they are doiing now....

Re: Hydro locked

I had the boat hauled last fall. I drove the boat myself two hours to the haul out site. The mechanic came to my house to winterize the engine and shrinkwrap. As of yesterday, he said the winterization was perectly normal. The boat ran great, brought it up to temp and ran 5 gallons of antifreeze through the engine, fogged the carb and put it to bed. Now, 6 months later the yard is telling me the engine is seized and can't be turned over by hand. If it is seized it was not done under any load, and there is no water either in the cylinders or in the oil. I am stumped as to how it could have seized over the winter.

Re: Hydro locked

find out if this mechanic drained everything first BEFORE putting the A/F in.If not the block/manifolds cracked and allowed what was in the motor and manifolds to enter the cylinder(s).
5.7 block will take 2 gallons, each manifold takes about 1/2 gallon. BUT if the therm was not open ,you will still see pink come out the exaust because the rubber parts need cooling . All this means is that the block contained 2 gallons of water that froze.
